Various thrips species can be encountered on ornamental crops during the growing season, and they vary in body color. Some thrips species also vector viruses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6 cu-bg-cg200\" style=\"padding: 20px;border-bottom: 4px solid #f56600\">\n<h2>Damage &amp; Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>Thrips are piercing and sucking insects that feed on leaves, flower petals, and growing tips of plants. Their feeding leads to irregularly shaped spots or stippling on the damaged plant tissues. Flowers can be discolored, distorted, or drop early due to thrips feeding. Leaf damage appears as silvery streaking or stippling, and feces may be visible on infested leaves and flowers. Thrips can also vector plant viruses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x grid-margin-x\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;padding-top: 30px;border-top: 4px solid #f56600\">\n<div class=\"cell medium-6 cu-bg-cg200\" style=\"padding: 20px;border-bottom: 4px solid #f56600\">\n<h2>Life Cycle<\/h2>\n<p>The life cycle of thrips is highly dependent on temperature. It can complete its life cycle from egg to adult in about 12 to 14 days at 86\u00b0F. Thrips lay eggs in leaf tissue, and nymphs begin feeding on leaf tissue. Nymphs can take about 11 days to reach the &#8216;pupal&#8217; stage. Adults emerge from pupae after 3 to 4 days and move back onto leaves or flowers. Adult thrips can survive for as long as 40 days in warm weather. Multiple generations occur each year due to the short life cycle of thrips.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6 cu-bg-cg200\" style=\"padding: 20px;border-bottom: 4px solid #f56600\">\n<h2>Scouting<\/h2>\n<p>Scouting for thrips can be done using yellow or blue sticky cards placed in a greenhouse. Inspect plants for the presence of adults and nymphs on leaves and flowers. Monitor leaves and flowers for feeding damage and feces. Remove weeds, plant debris, and growth medium inside and around greenhouses. Eliminate unwanted plants and flowers properly. Use insect exclusion screens with a mesh size &lt; 0.88 mm in vents, sidewalls, and doors. Trap plants like marigold can also be used in empty greenhouses to trap and remove thrips emerging from the soil.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6 cu-bg-cg200\" style=\"padding: 20px;border-bottom: 4px solid #f56600\">\n<h2>Biological Control<\/h2>\n<p>Predatory mites, minute pirate bugs, rove beetles, and predatory mites can be used for controlling thrips at different stages. Various entomopathogenic fungi, nematodes, and bacteria are available for foliar applications. Lesions coalesce as disease progresses girdling the leaf, causing it to twist and curl the leaf tip downward which results in the characteristic \u201cshepherd\u2019s crook\u201d symptom. On high humidity mornings, fuzzy, gray mycelium may be visible on infected tissue. Stand symptoms are diffuse in warm season grasses, while in cool season grasses stand symptoms are patches under a foot in diameter and are orange to yellow in color. If perennial ryegrass or tall fescue are left untreated, severe outbreaks of gray leaf spot can lead to canopy collapse with matted and greasy looking leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Images of gray leaf spot symptoms:<\/p>\n<p><!-- Include your images here --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\">\n<h2>When Does it Occur?<\/h2>\n<p>Gray leaf spot is most severe on newly planted turfgrass. The risk of excessive turfgrass loss tends to decrease as stands mature. Gray leaf spot can occur when nighttime temperatures are above 70 \u00b0F and daytime temperatures are 80-90 \u00b0F, but is most prevalent during rainy summer months. The pathogen requires around 14 hours of continuous leaf wetness to initiate infection. Succulent leaf tissue from heavy summer N fertilization is highly susceptible to infection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x grid-margin-x\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;border-top: 4px solid #f56600;padding-top: 30px\">\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\">\n<h2>Cultural Management<\/h2>\n<p>Where possible, plant resistant cultivars of perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, or St. Augustinegrass. Reduce leaf wetness periods by scheduling irrigation to occur when the foliage is already wet, increase airflow to promote drying, and remove dew on high-value areas. Collect clippings to reduce spreading disease. Do not apply late-summer N to cool-season turfgrasses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\">\n<h2>Chemical Management<\/h2>\n<p>Early curative fungicide applications can be made when symptoms are first observed in warm-season grasses and tall fescue, which are less susceptible to rapid disease development. Perennial ryegrass is extremely susceptible to rapid development of severe damage and as such preventative applications are recommended. Preventative applications should begin in June. Fungicide resistance to QoI fungicides is documented in gray leaf spot. Due to the pathogen\u2019s rate of reproduction, development of additional resistance is a major concern. Turf initially appears off-color and lacks vigor. As summer stress intensifies, patches become yellow to tan in color and eventually collapse to the soil surface. The leading edge of patches may have an orange color to them. Patches may have a \u201cfrog-eye\u201d appearance where seemingly healthy turf or resistant weedy species are present in the center of the patch.<\/p>\n<p>Leaves of turfgrass plants infected by the summer patch pathogen will begin exhibiting dieback from the leaf tip. Blighting of the leaf will progress until the entire leaf is blighted. These foliar symptoms are typically tan in color. Affected plants are easily pulled from the soil surface. Above-ground symptoms become evident in mid- to late-summer when the compromised root systems are unable to help the plant survive environmental stresses. Excessive heat, drought stress, compaction, soil pH above 6.5, excessive thatch accumulation, and nutrient deficiencies are major factors in summer patch development. Low mowing heights during summer stress can also exacerbate symptoms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x grid-margin-x\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;padding-top: 30px;border-top: 4px solid #f56600\">\n<div class=\"cell medium-6 cu-bg-cg200\" style=\"padding: 20px;border-bottom: 4px solid #f56600\">\n<h2>Cultural Management<\/h2>\n<p>Maintain rootzones to promote plant growth. Hollow tine aerification in the fall can help alleviate compaction. Solid tine aerification in the spring may exacerbate summer patch infection. Remove excess thatch buildup through vertical mowing. Maintain soil pH between 6.0 and 6.5 with acidifying fertilizers, such as ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate. Test soil for manganese levels, as manganese deficiencies have been linked to more severe summer patch. Deep, infrequent irrigation will promote deeper root systems that can better tolerate summer patch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6 cu-bg-cg200\" style=\"padding: 20px;border-bottom: 4px solid #f56600\">\n<h2>Chemical Management<\/h2>\n<p>Fungicides can provide excellent control of summer patch, but they must be applied preventatively, as the root system is already compromised once above-ground symptoms are observed. Preventative fungicide applications should be made in the spring when soil temperatures reach 65 \u00b0F. Excellent control can be achieved with two or three applications made on 28-day intervals. Applications should be watered in immediately to deliver the fungicide to the rootzone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x grid-margin-x\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;padding-bottom: Plant symptoms of anthracnose foliar blight appear as reddish\u2011brown lesions on leaves. On annual bluegrass, elongated, chlorotic leaf spots with black spore\u2011producing acervuli appear in the center. Older leaves affected by foliar blight may appear completely water\u2011soaked and, as the disease progresses, become necrotic with acervuli scattered across them.<\/p>\n<p>The base of plants with basal rot appears brown to black and water\u2011soaked. Crowns become soft and rotted with small black acervuli present. Affected leaves look yellow to orange without visible lesions.<\/p>\n<p>Under the microscope, acervuli show characteristic black setae (spines) protruding from the infection mat. Spores of <em>C. cereale<\/em> are crescent\u2011shaped with a distinctive \u201coil\u2011globule\u201d in the center.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>    <!-- When Does it Happen? --><\/p>\n<div class=\"cell small-12 medium-12 large-6 cu-bg-cg200\" style=\"padding:20px;border-bottom:4px solid #f56600\">\n<h2>When Does it Happen?<\/h2>\n<p>Anthracnose is most common on annual bluegrass, although highly stressed creeping bentgrasses can also be infected by <em>C. cereale<\/em>. Favorable temperatures for anthracnose development appear to be more related to turfgrass growth than to pathogen growth. In South Carolina, the disease is most problematic during the summer when turfgrass is under significant heat stress. Favorable air temperatures for web bight range from 68 to 90\u00b0 F, with an optimal temperature range of 75 to 86\u00b0 F. High humidity and poor air circulation favor disease development.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\">\n<h2>Cultural Management<\/h2>\n<p>Web blight can be successfully managed through cultural practices that promote proper air circulation and reduce relative humidity. Prune dense canopies and do not place plants too close together. Irrigation should be applied early in the morning, and overhead irrigation should be avoided if possible. In landscape settings, mulch can be used to prevent soil being splashed onto foliage from rain or irrigation. Do not re-use potting soil. There are several fungal genera that cause rust, with Puccinia, Uromyces, Phragimidium, and Pucciniastrum being the most common. Rust fungi have narrow host ranges. Some rusts cycle between alternate hosts while the primary host is dormant or absent, such as cedar-apple rust.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6 cu-bg-cg200\" style=\"padding: 20px\">\n<h2>Symptoms &amp; Signs<\/h2>\n<p>Rust fungi are obligate parasites, meaning they require a living host to survive. As a result, rust fungi do not typically kill their host. Plant symptoms include yellow or orange spots on leaves, and severe infections can cause who leaves to become chlorotic or necrotic. Whole plants may become stunted and wilt-prone under extreme levels of infection by rust fungi.<\/p>\n<p>Rust gets its name from the small, raised circular spots, or pustules, that form on leaves, stems, and petioles. These pustules house spores that are yellow-orange to brown in color. Gently rubbing the pustules with your hand or a tissue will dislodge the spores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x grid-margin-x\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;border-top: 4px solid #f56600;padding-top: 30px\">\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\">\n<h2>When Does it Occur?<\/h2>\n<p>The life cycle of rust fungi varies greatly. Some rusts complete their entire life cycle on a single host, while others require two or more hosts to complete their life cycle. Spores are moved short distances by wind, water, insects, and animals. Wind can also move spores across large distances. In general rusts will overwinter as spores or mycelia in plants or plant debris. Spore germination requires water on the plant surface. Rust fungi are most problematic during extended periods of moderate temperatures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\">\n<h2>Cultural Management<\/h2>\n<p>Plant resistant varieties, if available. Avoid overhead irrigation where possible. If overhead irrigation is unavoidable, irrigate early in the morning to avoid prolonging leaf wetness periods. Maintain adequate spacing between plants to avoid restricting airflow. In perennial plants you can prune out infected material. Infected plants should be removed and destroyed in greenhouse or nursery settings to protect uninfected plants. Patches are brown or tan in color on high cut turf and are brown to orange in low cut turfgrass. In higher cut turfgrass, the center of patched may begin to recover resulting in diffuse green turfgrass in the center of the patch.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms on individual plants varies between high and low cut turfgrass. On high cut turfgrasses leaf lesions have irregularly shaped borders with a chocolate brown border. Symptoms are not visible on leaves of low cut turfgrass.<\/p>\n<p>On low mowed turfgrasses (i.e., putting greens), a \u201csmoke-ring\u201d of aerial white mycelium may be present on the margin of the patch on mornings with very high humidity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\" style=\"padding: 20px\">\n<h2>When Does it Happen?<\/h2>\n<p>Brown patch occurs when daily low and high temperatures consistently exceed 75\u00b0 and 90\u00b0 F, respectively. Though, disease can begin to occur when daily lows exceed 60\u00b0 F. The brown patch fungus requires leaf wetness periods of 10-12 h for several days for infection to occur. Factors that restrict air circulation and leaf drying favor brown patch development.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x grid-margin-x\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;border-bottom: 4px solid #f56600;padding-bottom: 30px\">\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\" style=\"padding: 20px\">\n<h2>Cultural Management<\/h2>\n<p>Plant improved cultivars to reduce brown patch potential. Reducing leaf wetness periods can greatly reduce brown patch development, as the pathogen requires 10-12 h of leaf wetness to infect. Irrigate deeply and infrequently and in the early morning hours when turfgrass leaves are already wet. If possible, removing or pruning trees or shrubs restricting airflow can help reduce improve airflow and dry foliage. Dew removal practices, such as hose dragging or dew whipping, are good management practices to reduce leaf wetness periods on golf courses. Promote drainage through regular aeration practices.<\/p>\n<p>Historically it was thought that brown patch was associated with excessive N fertilization in the summer months. Recent research from NC State suggests this might not be the case. In fact, combining 0.5 lbs N per 1000 ft2 in the summer months can help maintain turfgrass quality and help turfgrass recover.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cell medium-6\" style=\"padding: 20px\">\n<h2>Chemical Management<\/h2>\n<p>There are effective options for both preventative and curative management of brown patch. Though preventative programs are recommended for high-value areas. Preventative programs should begin when daily lows exceed 60\u00b0 F. Curative applications may benefit from a supplemental light N application to encourage recovery of slow-growing cool-season turfgrasses.<\/p>\n<p>Biological control agents are available and can reduce brown patch severity compared to not using anything. When utilizing biological control agents, applications should be initiated about 1 month prior to favorable weather for brown patch is expected. Ideally, biological control agent applications should be made 7 d apart and no more than 10 d apart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-x grid-margin-x\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;padding-top:
