Stress is a normal and expected reaction to these transitions. Students may experience stress associated with academic demands, family problems, social relations, work, financial concerns, and cultural experiences. Resources that students had while living at home are altered and they may find themselves isolated, lonely, and frustrated. While most students face stress and cope with the emerging demands of college life, for some, the pressures become overwhelming and unmanageable. The inability to cope effectively with emotional distress can lead to disruptions in a student’s overall functioning and pose a serious threat to academic success. As a community of faculty, staff, and students we are in a unique position to show concern and care. Proactive, timely, and at times reactive expressions of concern can be helpful in regulating and maintaining the emotional equilibrium that can lead to a successful college career for our students.

Faculty, teaching assistants, University staff members, and fellow students often become concerned about students who suddenly stop attending their classes or other campus activities, miss an exam, stop responding to emails, or otherwise exhibit changes in behavior. The purpose of this guidance is to provide information that will assist in identifying students in distress and specific options for intervention and for referral to campus resources. This guide outlines three Rs to help navigate courses of action in potential situations of student distress: RECOGNIZE, RESPOND, and RESOURCES. This guide emphasizes the difference between an emergency and non-emergency situation. Both situations require attention. We encourage you to follow this process to support the health and safety of our students.

RECOGNIZE

EMERGENCY. RECOGNIZE a Serious Mental Health Crisis

A crisis is a situation where a student’s usual coping style becomes overwhelmed and the emotional and physiological responses escalate. This mandate is in effect for three weeks. During the mandate, if you encounter a student who refuses to comply, you can (a) inform them publicly that their actions constitute a Code of Conduct violation and they may be referred to the Office of Community and Ethical Standards (OCES), or (b) ask them to see you after class so you can get their name. There is no need to escalate the encounter into a heated confrontation. If they still do not comply, contact the Office of Community and Ethical Standards (OCES) immediately and they will respond to accordingly (864-656-0510; khodge3@clemson.edu). Student Affairs sent a message to all students reminding them of the importance of mask compliance as we begin the Fall semester.

Starting August 22, the COVID-19 testing location returned to Littlejohn Coliseum.

Fall 2021 Classes

Review the Undergraduate Class Regulations and Graduate Class Regulations letters that contain important information for those teaching classes this semester.

If a student has to miss class due to COVID-19 (or any excused absence), it is recommended that instructors have students notify them through the Notification of Absences form in Canvas or click HERE. In addition to informing instructors, this will also inform other relevant campus offices of the situation. Because masks are required and contact-tracing procedures are in effect combined with stringent surveillance testing of everyone, instructors will not receive additional notification of a positive case in their class beyond communication from the affected student.

Keep in mind that there will likely be students who have to miss class for an extended period of time due to COVID-19. In some cases, depending on symptoms, students will still be able to participate online. Please consider how you will work them to keep them from falling behind in class in these situations.

If a student notifies you that they have tested positive or been exposed to someone with COVID-19, there is no need to switch your class to online. This can go a long way in putting minds at ease over the next couple of weeks. It can also be an opportunity for instructors to gather some information about their students relevant to their learning and what challenges/concerns the students foresee. Students want to be prepared for the beginning of classes and this contact will help them do so.

Students with href="https://news.clemson.edu/course-modality-policy-modification-summer-and-fall-2021/">Course Modality Modification was posted on April 9 and included in the April 12 edition of OURClemson. Due to the recent COVID-19 developments, they are being lenient with the originally posted deadlines. A student must complete the application through Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and provide appropriate documentation. SAS will review the requests and if they find that the request meets the criteria, they will reach out to individual instructors. In the requests, there must be documentation from a medical professional that the student themselves has a condition that makes them high-risk with respect to COVID-19. If SAS does not find that the request meets their criteria, then they will deny the request, but potentially suggest that the student work with individual faculty. There are some students who have extreme situations beyond their control and faculty may agree to work with them.

If a student submits a request through SAS who then deems it an appropriate request (there are relatively few campus-wide), then instructors will get a follow-up email from Margaret Camp with SAS. Since this would be a course modality modification and not an accommodation, there is not a requirement that the student have an equivalent course experience as those participating in-person. With that said, here are some examples of how an instructor could accommodate this student in their course:

Use the videoconferencing technology in the classroom to either stream the class live for the student or record the class for the student view asynchronously. I understand that in a large class, it may be difficult to manage a single student participating virtually, so this can be communicated to the student ahead of time.

If the course material is already available in an online format (from a previous semester or instructor). The material can be made available to the student as an asynchronous variation of the course. The student could still participate in virtual office hours, submit assignments, take exams, etc. on the same or similar schedule as the rest of the class.

Teach the course hybrid as we did last year with approved students participating remotely. This may not be a popular choice, but it is an option.

Move the student to an online section of the course if one is available.

If the student’s request is not deemed appropriate by SAS, he/she may still contact their instructors to see if they would be willing to accommodate him. That will be at the instructor’s discretion, but there are faculty who are working it out even if it won’t be the most ideal experience for the student (from the instructor’s perspective). All of the above options still apply.

Instructor Resources

Instructors should refer to the <a
