Clemson Students Participate in Deloitte Audit Innovation Campus Challenge

August 22, 2022

During the Fall 2021 semester, a team of six accounting majors participated in the Deloitte Audit Innovation Campus Challenge. The Challenge involved 70 of the top colleges and universities in the U.S. Prior Clemson teams twice proceeded through the competition to the “finals” at Deloitte University near Dallas. Clemson’s 2021 six-person team included Elizabeth Braunstein, Jennifer Cagno, Hannah Fugate, Nathan Higgins, Margaret McGlone, and Katelyn Tindal, with lecturer Terry Knause serving as the faculty advisor.

This years “challenge statement” involved public companies reporting on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) information, perhaps the hottest topic in accounting today, though, ironically, it does not pertain to financial statements or financial information. For almost all competitors, this was their first exposure to ESG reporting by public companies, and it was a genuine learning experience.

The team submitted a professional and engaging video focusing on the “Social” aspects of ESG. Along the way, the team closely interacted with Deloitte professionals who advised them, and the team attended virtual presentations by Deloitte’s national team on ESG. Deloitte also introduced all competitors to their different professional service lines and opportunities. The competition was capped off with a celebratory dinner with the Deloitte representatives that assisted the Clemson team throughout the competition.
