Calling all budding scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians! The Programs for Educational Enrichment and Retention (PEER) and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program at Clemson University recently hosted an exciting STEM Day event, aimed at inspiring and engaging middle school students from diverse backgrounds in the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math.
STEM Day was a hit, featuring a variety of activities that put the fun in fundamental science. From lab tours and demonstrations to hands-on experiments and 3D printing displays, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The day also included several workshops hosted by renowned experts in the field of STEM. Ph.D. Enrique Saez, joint appointment in the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering departments, Ph.D. Brandon Ross, Cottingham Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Ph.D. Fadi Abdeljawad, Assistant Professor of Mechanical
Engineering, and Grace Fulmer Crocker, Lecturer of General Engineering at Clemson University each hosted their own workshop, providing students with a unique and informative experience. But the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the panel discussion, featuring undergraduate and graduate students who shared their insights into the exciting world of STEM fields. For those curious about college life at Clemson, the panel was an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about what it takes to succeed in science, technology, engineering, and math. The panelists gave a firsthand account of their experiences in STEM fields, providing valuable insights into the many opportunities and possibilities available to those
pursuing careers in these exciting fields. STEM Day was more than just a fun-filled day of activities and discussions. It was also a celebration of diversity and inclusion, a core value of the PEER&WISE program. The mentoring program, in particular, plays a vital role in creating a welcoming and inclusive community for students of all ethnic and cultural
backgrounds. The program aims to increase retention and graduation rates for underrepresented populations in STEM by connecting incoming first-year and transfer students with upper-level mentors. STEM Day was a success, showcasing the excitement and possibilities of STEM fields while emphasizing the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM education.
