Clemson’s Student Steel Bridge Team Earns the Most Improved Team Award at National Finals

June 4, 2025

Just this past weekend, our Steel Bridge Team competed in the AISC National Championship in Ames, Iowa, and took home the John M. Yadlosky Most Improved Team Award.  The students from the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering were challenged to put their structural knowledge and fabrication skills to the test. We are very proud of our students and their accomplishments – winning their regional competition, advancing to nationals, and receiving the most improved team award.

The Student Steel Bridge Competition is sponsored by ASCE with the winning teams from twenty regional competitions going on to the national competition. Judging categories for the national competition included construction speed, lightness, stiffness, cost estimate, economy, and efficiency; the aesthetics category was omitted.

This year’s national competition was unique because there was an added requirement to design and build a bridge that enhances its surroundings, with particular emphasis on protecting local flora and fauna. The bridge site chosen was a barrier island with local wildlife habitats within the the Skunk River Trail in Story County, Iowa. The competition was held at Iowa State University on May 31st.
