We are thrilled to share that Dr. Miguel Cid Montoya, Assistant Professor in the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering, and his collaborator and doctoral candidate, Omar Mures, have been honored with the EACWE 2025 PhD Award at the 9th European-African Conference on Wind Engineering (EACWE2025). The award was given by Professor Jasna B. Jakobsen, chair of the EACWE PhD Award Committee, for the paper titled “Extreme Compression of URANS Flow Data”, co-authored by Omar A. Mures, Miguel Cid Montoya, Sumit Verma, and Ashutosh Mishra.
This prestigious recognition celebrates cutting-edge contributions in the field of wind engineering, highlighting research that pushes the boundaries of aerodynamic data processing. The award was presented during the closing ceremony of EACWE2025, held at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.
An extended version of the awarded paper has recently been published in Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering (CACAIE, IF = 9.1), and was selected for the journal’s back cover feature—a rare distinction that further affirms the significance of this work. In a lighter moment at the conference, Dr. Cid Montoya also claimed victory in the “Critical Wind Speed of a Troll” contest—a playful challenge where participants predicted the wind velocity at which a troll figure would tip over in a wind tunnel. Thus, why he is holding a troll figure. While not a scientific competition, it brought levity and laughter to a week of serious scholarship.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Miguel Cid Montoya and his collaborators on this outstanding international recognition!
