Eman Zuhair Alhamdan has been awarded the Legacy of Learning Scholarships by the Water Environment Association of South Carolina (WEASC) (Scholarships – SCAWWA/WEASC). This honor is a testament to her exceptional achievements and dedication. The scholarship supports students committed to advancing the water profession and reflects their achievements as future leaders in the field.
Eman’s research centers on the application of vacuum ultraviolet radiation (VUV) to water treatment, with a particular emphasis on the degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This work addresses a critical environmental challenge, as PFAS contamination has emerged as a significant concern, while the use of VUV technology in water treatment remains relatively unexplored compared to conventional UV approaches.
In addition to this recognition, Eman’s work has gained international attention. She has presented her research at the International Ultraviolet Association conferences, and in 2025, she was awarded a highly competitive travel award by the association. Eman’s advisor is Dr. Ezra Cates and they continue to collaborate in her research.
