This project will evaluate the impact of Hurricane Helene on the distribution and habitat of habitat-specialists such as Allegheny woodrat and Southern Appalachian water shrew. It will identify priority areas for restoration, such as reforestation around specific rock-outcrops or streambanks, and inform management decisions to help rare mammals persist. This will be accomplished through field surveys, trapping, radio-telemetry to track movement, and GIS data to map habitat.
