University families interested in ensuring their child’s car seat is correctly installed can have the seat inspected on campus 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 as part of Clemson’s Safety Awareness Month activities.
This inspection is a collaborative project of the Clemson University Police Department and the Institute for Global Road Safety and Security’s Child Passenger Safety Program. A NHTSA-certified child passenger safety technician will conduct the inspections. The inspection takes about 30 minutes and appointments are needed. Child safety seats are encouraged because:
- Traffic crashes are the leading cause of unintentional death and injury for children from birth through age 13.
- When properly installed and used, child safety seats reduce the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers.
- Inspection data indicates that 3 out of 4 children riding in child safety seats are improperly restrained.
