Clemson Compilation: A Year in Review

This has been a busy year at Clemson University, from the inauguration of a new president to the Tigers beating the Gamecocks at football. We put our heads together to come up with this list of the top Clemson stories of 2014. Watch a video compilation here.

1. Jim Clements assumes presidency

Succeeding President James Barker, Jim Clements became Clemson University’s 15th president in January of 2014. His inaugural year has undoubtedly been a success, as marked by the successes of Clemson University itself.

2. Bob Jones named executive VP for academic affairs and provost

Migrating south from West Virginia University, Bob Jones was hired as Clemson’s first executive vice president for academic affairs and provost in 2014. In this position, he provides leadership for both the university’s undergraduate and graduate programs.

3. Construction

The Core Campus Project and Douthit Hills are among the major projects that are under way! In the coming months and years, various academic, residential and dining buildings will begin to appear around campus. While the construction may cause some inconvenience today, it is a small price to pay for progress.

4. 100 Years of Cooperative Extension

2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act, legislation that formalized the Cooperative Extension Service, a state-by-state network of educators nationwide that extends university-based knowledge to the people. Specifically, Clemson shares research-based knowledge in the fields of agriculture, natural resources, food safety and nutrition, economic and community development, and 4-H youth development.

5. Clemson Defeats USC

Clemson was victorious over rival USC in Memorial Stadium on Nov. 29, defeating the Gamecocks 35-17.

6. Will to Lead campaign exceeded $800 million

The gifts to Clemson University’s The Will to Lead philanthropy campaign reached $800 million during this fiscal year, putting Clemson well on its way toward reaching its $1 billion goal.

7. Clemson Becomes Top 20 University

U.S.News & World Report ranked Clemson as one of the top 20 public universities in the nation, along with its other many achievements. (

8. Clemson’s 125th anniversary

2014 marked the 125th anniversary since Clemson University’s founding in 1889. Throughout Legacy Month in November, the signing of Thomas Green Clemson’s will, the 176th wedding anniversary of Anna and Thomas and the annual Legacy Day were all celebrated as beloved fall traditions.

9. ClemsonTV Launch

Replacing Tigervision, ClemsonTV launched Oct. 24 of this year with the livestream coverage of Tigerama. ClemsonTV not only brings university news to its students, but it is also able to spread university news to global audiences.

10. Clemson Men’s Soccer wins ACC Championship

The Clemson’s Men’s Soccer program won its 14th ACC Tournament title on Nov. 16 when the team defeated Louisville 2-1 in a double overtime match.
