Comment period on Phase I of 2020Forward initiative is open through Feb. 20

As the 2020Forward initiative continues on, a two-week open comment period on Phase I results has begun.

From now through Feb. 20, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Bob Jones is requesting feedback from the University community on the proposed strategies in relation to undergraduate learning, graduate education and research. A fourth overarching strategies area is also available for comment. These institution-wide strategies are common themes that were found within each of the three focus areas. During the two-week period, 2020Forward co-chairs Ellen Granberg and Brett Dalton will also be seeking feedback from campus groups, such as the Faculty and Staff senates, and others.

After the comment period ends, Granberg and Dalton, along with the three Phase I committee chairs, will work through all the feedback, looking for common themes and identifying needed updates to the proposed strategies.

“The past two days we have been thrilled with the amount and quality of feedback from all campus constituencies,” Granberg said. “Just like the 2020Forward committees have done for the past month, our colleagues and peers are taking this process to heart and really diving into and offering constructive criticism and feedback.”

Phase II is scheduled to begin in early March. In Phase II, a new set of committees will take the revised reports and move them a step forward, focusing on the best ways to implement the recommendations. During this phase, a steering team will coordinate the work and the committees themselves will be smaller and will contain more strategic members, bringing the right people to the table to help determine what steps need to be taken to implement these strategic goals.

“Provost Jones was very pleased with the quality of the work and the results of the Phase I committees,” Granberg said. “In Phase II we plan to build on that foundation, involving more members of the University community.”

The next major update for 2020Forward will occur in April.  At that point, the Phase I recommendations will be finalized and many Phase II committees will have released draft recommendations.

Jones is looking forward to the continuing campus conversation about Clemson’s strategic direction.

“I so appreciate the thoughtfulness and candor of the feedback we have received so far on the draft Phase I strategies,” Jones said. “I am excited to keep the conversation moving and use the University’s community input to create the plan that will take Clemson to the next level.”
