Crump named controller, associate vice president

Associate controller Steven H. Crump, CPA, has been named associate vice president and controller.

He succeeds Charles Tegen, who has been the controller more than 25 years and with the university 35 years. Tegen will continue as an associate vice president, working on strategic tasks and goals.

Brett Dalton, vice president for finance and operations, noted that Tegen is one of the most accomplished business professionals in higher education. He served as the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) board chairman and president in 2012-2013. He received NACUBO’s Daniel D. Robinson Accounting Award in 2004, and served in many professional organizations.

Crump, a 1978 Clemson graduate, joined the university staff in 1990 after working in public accounting. As associate controller since 1992, he has had responsibility for accounting, financial reporting, financial systems and tax responsibilities. He also has led numerous university departments and initiatives, including payroll, sponsored programs post award accounting and compliance, capital and debt planning. Crump has served as the secretary/treasurer of two of the university’s related organizations since 2005.

Tegen and Crump are responsible for the university receiving the Government Finance Officers of America (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the past 21 consecutive years.

Crump received the 2010 Clemson University Board of Visitors Service Award, given to non-faculty employees who have supported students and university goals in an exemplary and sustained manner.

“I appreciate the opportunity and the confidence that has been placed in me,” Crump said. “Charles Tegen has been a fantastic mentor to me, and I am thankful that he will still be here at Clemson for consultation.

“I also thank all of the members of my staff and the numerous other accounting and business professionals that I have worked with over the years here at Clemson. They truly make this a great place to come to work each day.”

“Effecting a seamless transition of leadership is a goal throughout the Finance Division,” said Dalton. “Charles and I both have confidence in Steve Crump’s capability to function as controller.”
