Inside Clemson

Here’s your chance to weigh in on what students learn

In case you haven’t heard, the world of work is changing.  College students entering the workforce can anticipate:

  • having an average of 15 job changes during their careers (Meister, 2012)
  • having a 20% likelihood they will relocate for a job (Ihrke, 2014)
  • being one of four people who will take contract-based employment opportunities (Erikson, 2012)

Compelling, right?  The Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) asked itself – how can Clemson ensure its equipping students with the competencies and mindset needed to navigate a changing world?  The CCPD got to work to begin envisioning a different way to help students develop and articulate the competencies they are acquiring from all of the experiences they acquire as a result of being a Clemson student.

Clemson University is an innovator and active contributor to the national conversation occurring on career readiness and competency development.  After presenting at a regional conference, Clemson came together with the University of Tampa to plan and co-host a symposium on May 24-25, 2017 at the Madren Conference Center.  The goal is to bring together colleges and universities who want to learn strategies to implement an institutional-wide competency initiative.

Not only will the symposium have attendees from institutions like Virginia Tech, Duke University, Auburn University and employers such as Michelin North America, GE, and ITRON, but the symposium is receiving national attention and endorsement by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.  Even though Clemson is ahead of its peers, there are still opportunities to take competencies to the next level.

As a result, the Center for Career and Professional Development is providing an opportunity for faculty and staff to gather on Friday, May 26th at the Madren Conference Center from 8:30am – noon.  The CCPD is calling it its Tigers Only Day.  Faculty and staff are invited to attend for free and bring multiple people from their department to engage in action-oriented conversations.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to be part of what will help Clemson students have a competitive edge.
