Mary Beth Kurz became the 61st president of Clemson’s Faculty Senate at its monthly meeting yesterday. Kurz was the vice president/president elect for the 2015 – 2016 academic year under the leadership of most recent past President, Dr. Jim McCubbin.

“I will do my very best to elicit your wants, needs and desires and convey that to the administration,” she said in her first speech as Faculty Senate president.

In the midst of celebration it is also worth noting, Kurz is the sixth woman to serve in this position. Other women that have held this prestigious office include:

  1. Corinne Sawyer, 1971 – 1972
  2. Holley Ulbrich 1983 – 1984
  3. Patricia Smart, 1998 – 1999
  4. Connie Lee, 2005 – 2006
  5. Beth Kunkel 2006 – 2007

During her tenure as president, the energetic Kurz will focus on engagement of special ranks in faculty governance, diversity and inclusion, and communication with administration.

Alan Schaffer award

The April Faculty Senate meeting is a momentous occasion not only because of the transition of office, but also the acknowledgement of service and the giving of the Alan Schaffer Award for Service.

This year’s award winner is Antonis Katsiyannis, a past Faculty Senate president.

The Faculty Senate also welcomes new senators, delegates, and alternates to its ranks and with a spirit of gratitude says farewell to those rotating off the Senate. With Kurz at the helm, Faculty Senate enters the 2016 – 2017 academic year looking forward to providing service and excellence to Clemson University and the surrounding community.

2016 – 2017 Faculty Senate leadership includes:

  • Mary Beth Kurz (E&S), President
  • Amy Lawton – Rauh (CAFLS), Vice President/President-Elect
  • Neil Calkin (E&S), Secretary
