New university process allows students to use preferred first name

By Jackie Todd, Office of Media Relations

Students who use a name other than their legal name to identify themselves will now be able to use their preferred first name under a new Clemson policy. The Preferred First Name procedure will go into effect for the Spring 2016 semester.

“We recognize that many students use names other then their given name to identify themselves,” said Debra Sparacino, Clemson’s registrar. “This change will allow a more consistent preferred identification experience for students, faculty and staff.”

Students who want to use a preferred first name should go to my.Clemson > My Profile > Name for more information.

Clemson University’s infrastructure is multi-faceted and complex so the task of updating all systems to display the preferred first name will take some time. In this first phase, students’ preferred first names will appear in:

  • The my.Clemson directory (online phonebook)
  • Personal Blackboard Profile
  • Class rolls in the Business Objects data warehouse and the iROAR report generator

As part of the change, faculty and staff can also choose to use their preferred first name. For now, it will appear in the university’s online phonebook and in their personal profile in Blackboard. Similar to students, faculty and staff who want to use a preferred first name should go to my.Clemson > My Profile > Name to make that change.
