Parking and Transportation Services rolls out Park-and-Bike pilot program during Sustainability Week

Clemson University’s Parking and Transportation Services, in conjunction with the University’s first annual Sustainability Week, is introducing a new Park-and-Bike pilot program.

During the week of Feb. 18-22, 2013, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to park at the Campus Beach, located off of SC Highway 93, and ride a bicycle from the beach to campus using the bike lane on SC Highway 93. Organizers will use the pilot program to assess interest and solicit input for a Park-and-Bike program beginning in August 2013. Through this program, a significantly reduced rate parking permit may be purchased in exchange for parking at a remote location (i.e. campus beach) and biking in. For days with inclement weather, each participant will be given five one-day passes to park on campus.

As an added incentive, Parking and Transportation Services has arranged for the first 10 participants who sign up to receive a 15 percent discount on a Saris Cycle Rack (Saris.com) for your car or 20 percent off any bicycle helmet from Ride On Bicycles in Clemson.

Pilot program participants may either bring their own bicycle, or rent a bicycle from Clemson Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE) Office located at Campus Beach. A limited number of bicycles are available for rent throughout the week. A special weekly rate of $10 is available for Sustainability week only. Safety equipment and lock are included in your rental fee. Program participants who want to rent bicycles should reserve them in advance by clicking here.

As part of Sustainability Week, organizers will highlight Transportation Day on Tuesday, Feb.19. For this day only, one-day bicycle rentals from CORE will be available free of charge. Daily rental bikes must be returned to the CORE office by 5 p.m. If you are unable to return the bike by 5 p.m., please contact the CORE office at 864-656-0892 to let them know.

The bicycle repair shop at the campus beach, featuring tools and bike stands available to all participants to conduct minor repairs and adjustments, will be open 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. daily and during bicycle rental hours to support all pilot program participants.

The CORE office will be available for bicycle rentals during the following times.

  • Monday, Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 20 from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 21 from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

For participants who use their own bikes for the pilot program, outdoor bicycle racks are available for owners to lock up bicycles overnight at their own risk. Clemson University assumes no liability for any damage or theft associated with leaving a personal bike at the campus beach.
