The 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Planning Committee seeks volunteers invites faculty, staff and students to attend the Tunnel of Oppression Interest Meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 in Brackett 120.
The goal of Tunnel is to raise awareness about issues of power, privilege and oppression through depicting scenes grounded in real-world, lived experiences and providing a safe space for meaningful dialogue and reflection. The success and impact of Tunnel are a direct result of our student, faculty and staff volunteers who create and facilitate Tunnel exhibits and dialogue. As a staff or faculty member, this is a great way to interact with students who care about these issues while learning more about the different types of oppressions that happen every day. We also would love faculty to offer class credit to students who help plan or experience the Tunnel. You can get involved by being on the planning committee, serving as an actor/dialogue facilitator the day of the event, offering class credit or advertise for the Tunnel on campus. All volunteers get a free t-shirt.
Last year, the successful event drew more than 350 participants, who experienced the impact that Tunnel provides for every member of the Clemson community. Click here to watch the What’s Happening Inside Clemson video to hear first-hand from our organizers and volunteers.
This year’s Tunnel of Oppression event will will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan.22, 2015. If you have questions or are unable to attend the meeting and would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities, please contact Amber Lange, LaNita Weisenberger, or Leslie Snider.
