The Joseph F. Sullivan Center is offering classes to help bolster employees’ fitness – physically and emotionally – during 2014.

A Mindful Walking for Wellness class will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12-1 p.m., and a Relaxation Training class will be held on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

The Mindful Walking for Wellness class will give participants the opportunity to engage in outdoor walking around campus and learn more about how to incorporate mindfulness into their lives, according to Sullivan Center Health Educator Caitlin Moore.

“The benefits of this class include boosting cognition, decreasing anxiety and improving energy and stress management,” Moore added.

The group will begin their walk from the Sullivan Center, located on the first floor of Edwards Hall. In the event of inclement weather, they will meet at the Sullivan Center conference room and do indoor mindfulness exercises.

Participants may attend one or both days each week, and should get medical clearance for light exercise before participating. Casual or exercise apparel is recommended with comfortable shoes for walking.

The cost is free for those who participate in CUWell, the Sullivan Center’s wellness program, and $20 per month for non-CUWell members.

The Relaxation Training class will offer a range of strategies including visualization, progressive music relaxation, and mindfulness meditation in 50-minute, drop-in, free-standing sessions.

“Relaxation exercises are easy to learn and implement, and can be effective in addressing worry, stress, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, phobias, and emotional distress,” Moore said.

The cost is free for CUWell members and $20 per month for non-CUWell members, and sessions will be held at the Sullivan Center.
