Vehicle and moped thefts prompt security reminders

The Clemson University Police Department (CUPD) has reported a number of recent moped thefts and a motor vehicle theft that occurred yesterday near Schilletter Dining Hall. With that in mind, CUPD offers a few safety tips to help prevent these incidents from occurring in the future.

Motor vehicle security tips

  • Do not leave your keys in your car.
  • Close windows and lock your doors whenever exiting your car, regardless of the length of time you plan to be gone.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Do not leave valuables and packages in your car.
  • Immediately report any suspicious activity on campus to CUPD at 656-2222.

Moped security tips

  • Lock your ignition and remove the key.
  • Use locks to secure your moped. Locks take time to remove, which may deter thieves. Try attaching your lock away from the ground to limit any extra leverage for prying attempts. The lock should be attached through the frame, or less desirably through the forks or wheel. REMEMBER to remove your lock or cable before riding away.
  • If possible, attach and lock your moped to a stationary object.
  • Look for spots to park your moped that are visible.
  • Do not leave your moped running.
  • Keep your vehicle information in a safe place.
  • Immediately report any suspicious activity on campus to CUPD at 656-2222.
