What to do in the event of hazardous weather

Just a reminder to review Clemson University’s Emergency Closing Policy and Emergency Closing Procedure so you will know what to do if conditions deteriorate.

University officials monitor local weather conditions before making decisions to cancel classes, close offices or delay openings. You can find updates on the status of Clemson classes and office closings at these sources:

  • Clemson University homepage
  • CU Safety page – for detailed messages and weather advisories
  • University email
  • CU Safe Alert text messages via cell phone – click here for directions on how to sign up to receive alerts
  • CU Safe Twitter account (@cusafety)
  • County government offices website – for county-by-county closings
  • Clemson University switchboard (864 656-3311) – for recorded closure updates between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends
  • Local television and radio stations and affiliated station websites

Here are some important things to remember:

Per state regulations, only the governor can forgive time lost, so any part of your usual workday missed due to hazardous weather must be made up. Any announcement on television or radio most likely applies to classes and students. Further investigation may be in order to discover whether you, as an employee, are expected to report to work.

Clemson University is a state agency with employees spread throughout the state. If the governor has declared all state agencies closed, Clemson will be closed. If the governor has not declared all state agencies closed and only portions of the state are impacted, you should investigate whether or not your Clemson work location is closed or on delay through these steps:

  • Visit the county government offices website, which lists county-by-county closings.
  • Review the county government office’s schedule for your Clemson workplace.
  • Follow the schedule of that county’s government office.

Special Notes:

  • If your supervisor deems you “essential” to maintain vital operations, you are required to report to work during the closing.
  • Employees should not submit leave until the emergency closing has passed and leave information becomes available. The Office of Human Resources (OHR) will provide support and guidance on managing leave.
  • The bottom line is that each employee must take responsibility for the following:
    • Knowing and understanding the emergency closing procedure
    • Getting information on weather conditions and pertinent announcements about the university
    • Determining the safety of travel arrangements
    • Working with supervisors to make up any work time missed
