Clemson University learned Friday of the loss of one of its emeriti trustees, Bill L. Amick of Batesburg. The Clemson alumnus served on the board of trustees for 30 years, including two terms as its chairman.
On behalf of the board and the university, Chairman David Wilkins expressed condolences and high regard for Amick.
“Bill Amick was a treasured member of the Clemson family and served his alma mater faithfully as a trustee for three decades. He was a gentle giant and all of us in the Clemson family greatly benefitted from his leadership and wisdom. His quiet resolve and dedicated leadership made him a true asset to the University and the State of South Carolina.
“For a lifetime of professional success and achievement and for all he meant to the success of Clemson University and the larger community, we are forever grateful. We will hold his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Amick, 70, was elected by the S.C. General Assembly in 1983 to fill the unexpired term of Les Tindal on the university’s board of trustees. He was reelected by the General Assembly in 1986 for a four-year term. Amick was elected a successor trustee in November 1989. He was named vice chairman in September 1989 and served two terms as chairman, in 1991 and 1993respectively. He was a member of every standing committee at some point during his 30 years on the board.
Additionally, Amick served Clemson in many capacities beyond the board of trustees, with the Alumni Association, IPTAY, Clemson University Foundation (Founder’s Gift Club), Clemson University Agricultural Foundation Board and in establishing the A.D. Amick Memorial Scholarship.
Amick’s selfless contributions and loyalty to the university earned him the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award and the College of Agriculture’s Centennial Distinguished Alumni Award.
Amick was chief executive officer of The Amick Company and a real estate developer. His past positions included chairman and CEO of Amick Farms, Inc.; Amick Broilers, Inc.; Amick Processing, Inc.; owner of Team Amick Motorsports and owner of Renaissance Communities.
During his lifetime, he served on many boards for businesses and civic organizations and earned numerous honors.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in poultry science from Clemson in 1966.
Funeral service information
A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 102 Butler Street, Saluda, with a private family burial held earlier in the day. Visitation will be held 1- 3 p.m. at the Amick Company, 135 Homestead Road, Batesburg.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the T3 ministry. Memorials should be made payable to The Chapel in the Woods, 121 Homestead Road, Batesburg, S.C. 29006.
