Steven Chapman, Professor Emeritus of Agronomy and Soils and Dean – July 16, 2021

Steven Chapman, 84, of Chester, Ohio, Professor Emeritus of Agronomy and Soils and dean, died July 16, 2021.

Chapman began his career at Clemson University in 1977 as associate dean for the College of Agriculture and later became dean of the college. After taking a sabbatical from 1988 to 1991 to obtain his law degree, he returned to Clemson and briefly taught genetics before moving to the Office of the Vice President for Research as a senior contract adviser and patent law adviser. He retired from Clemson in 2005.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agronomy from the University of California-Davis and received a Ph.D. in genetics there in 1966.

Among his many accomplishments, Chapman was especially proud to be a fellow of the both the Crop Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy.

Chapman is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters, Cynthia Chapman and Cheryl Pettigrew (Charles); and his grandchildren, Tyler Pettigrew (Jenny), Malcolm Pettigrew (Kelly), Barbara Gary (Dan), Christoffer Lehnherr (Niki) and Abby Hardt (MacKenzie).
