During the 2017-2018 school year 11 Clemson students completed a design competition for NASA in their Micro-g NExT Challenge. In May the students traveled to Johnson Space Center for the culmination of the project, testing their devices in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory. The two Clemson teams, B-Unique and the Tune Squad, were solving the Sharp Edge Detection and Removal Challenge. On the International Space Station (ISS) small craters are formed on the handrails that the astronauts use to move around during space walks from Micrometeoroid Impacts (MMOD). In this challenge the students needed to detect and remove these impacts to prevent tears in the astronauts gloves.
The two Clemson teams were:
Team B-Unique
Morgan Perras
Melanie Hedge
Dylan Cassell
Stephen Miller
Will Oldham
Team Tune Squad
Nick Spivey
Kim Henning
Michael Furgeson
Meredith Sutton
Sam Borel
Will Pierce
The students spent a week at Johnson Space Center in Texas working with astronauts on real-world problems. Venessa Wyche, Deputy Director of JSC, help spearhead this project and is also a graduate of Clemson University.
