On Saturday, February 23, 2013, over 30 top high school students and their families from around the country visited Clemson University as semi-finalists in our National Scholars Program. Many of these visited Engineering and Science Departments and two of these visited the Mechanical Engineering Department. Mr. Chris Healey from Winston-Salem, NC and Mr. Henry Camp from Sullivan’s Island, SC were the two students interested primarily in Mechanical Engineering. Current ME student leaders and faculty members were present to give the visitors an idea of what our program has to offer.
Kenny Brown showed the current SAE Formula car and described student involvement. John Cleland and Christy Fletcher did the same for the SAE Baha car. The vehicles made quite an impression on everyone. Brian Wright gave an outstanding presentation of how students can profit from involvement in the Student ASME and described may of the reasons students should attend Clemson and the ME program in particular. Matthew Sheen presented the Creative Inquiry project on 3-D printing that he and others are working on. Dr. Mocko showed videos of some recent senior design projects and what quality work students can create solving industry sponsored projects. Dr. Biggers and Dr. Miller were present as the Undergraduate and Graduate Coordinators, respectively, and discussed the options students have at both levels. Posters describing research projects of undergraduate Honors and graduate students were also set up to give an idea of the range of advanced topics students can address through independent research.
The ME Department is fortunate to have had a large number of the final NSP award recipients among our student body. These students always achieve great things while at Clemson and after graduation. We wish these two outstanding young men the best and hope to see them in our classrooms and laboratories in the near future.
