Five students from the Clemson University rocket team recently went to a NASA workshop at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. They were accompanied by Garrett Pataky, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering.
The week-long workshop was part of the RockOn! program. Working in two teams, students soldered and assembled payloads to measure temperature, acceleration, and other factors before having them launched into space on a sounding rocket.
The students who participated are Brady Kinner, Charlie Dove, David Matthews, Jacky Wong, and Sam Stewart.
In early August, Pataky will be hosting a group of female students from R.B. Stall High School, a Title I school in North Charleston. They will have a chance to see Clemson University and then perform a tethered balloon launch as part of ThinSat.
ThinSat is a STEM outreach program to develop and test hardware components, culminating in an October launch.
