Clemson’s Advanced Materials Innovation Complex Opens New Era for Research, Education and Industry Partnership

Clemson University is ushering in a new era of advanced materials research, education and industry collaboration with the opening of its Advanced Materials Innovation Complex (AMIC), a state-of-the-art facility designed to accelerate discovery, prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers, and strengthen South Carolina’s growing advanced materials economy.

Located in the heart of Clemson’s main campus, the approximately 150,000-square-foot complex brings together researchers, students and industry partners working across materials science and engineering, chemistry, and chemical and biomolecular engineering. The $130 million facility is Clemson’s most technologically advanced building to date and provides cutting-edge laboratories, classrooms and collaborative spaces intended to encourage multidisciplinary research and education.

Advanced materials play a critical role in industries ranging from aerospace, transportation and electronics to health care and energy. By bringing expertise and sophisticated research capabilities together under one roof, AMIC positions Clemson to expand its impact in these fields while supporting the University’s status as a Carnegie R1 research institution.

More than 300 research faculty and graduate students are expected to work in the complex, while more than 12,000 students are projected to use its laboratories annually. The facility also serves as the new home of Clemson’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, helping consolidate programs and researchers that historically operated in separate locations.

AMIC’s potential to connect university research with industry is already attracting significant private support. The KYOCERA AVX Foundation has contributed $1 million to the complex, building on a longstanding relationship between Clemson and KYOCERA AVX, a global manufacturer of advanced electronic components with a major presence in South Carolina.

In recognition of the gift, the building’s main lobby will be named the KYOCERA AVX Lobby. The contribution supports Clemson’s efforts to advance innovation, talent development and manufacturing while creating additional opportunities for collaboration between students, faculty and industry.

The partnership reflects the close connection between the research conducted at Clemson and the technologies needed by advanced manufacturers. Work within AMIC has the potential to contribute to advances in electronics, energy, manufacturing and other sectors while giving students hands-on experience with technologies and research methods they will encounter in their careers.

Adding to AMIC’s research capabilities is a new center dedicated to advanced X-ray imaging and characterization. The Materials Science and Engineering Center for X-ray Advanced Imaging of Materials Structures expands Clemson’s ability to examine materials in ways that reveal features and behavior that cannot be seen from the surface.

Advanced X-ray techniques can provide researchers with detailed information about the internal structure of materials while allowing many samples to remain intact. Such capabilities are increasingly important as scientists seek to understand how a material’s internal structure influences its performance and how materials change during manufacturing or under real-world conditions.

The center creates opportunities for researchers to apply advanced imaging to a wide range of materials and structures and to connect those observations with other characterization, computational and experimental methods. Its location within Clemson’s broader advanced materials research environment is expected to foster collaboration across disciplines while also providing students access to sophisticated research tools.

Together, the new X-ray imaging capabilities, AMIC’s interdisciplinary research environment and support from partners such as KYOCERA AVX illustrate Clemson’s broader strategy for advanced materials: connect fundamental research with practical applications, strengthen partnerships with industry and provide students with experience at the forefront of technology.

The investment also comes as advanced materials continue to grow in importance to South Carolina’s economy. The state is home to hundreds of companies working in advanced materials and related manufacturing fields, creating demand for both technological innovation and a highly skilled workforce.

AMIC is designed to help meet both needs. Students will gain experience in modern laboratories and participate in research, while faculty will have new opportunities to pursue discoveries that can move from the laboratory into commercial applications. Industry partners, meanwhile, gain a hub for collaboration with Clemson researchers and access to a pipeline of graduates trained on emerging technologies.

With the opening of the Advanced Materials Innovation Complex, the establishment of new research capabilities and continued investment from industry, Clemson is positioning advanced materials as a cornerstone of its research and educational mission—and as a catalyst for innovation and economic growth in South Carolina and beyond.
