Rajendra Bordia Receives the University of Koblenz’s First Honorary Doctorate

The University of Koblenz has awarded its first honorary doctorate since becoming independent in 2023 to Prof. Dr. Rajendra K. Bordia of Clemson University. The university recognized his internationally distinguished work on high-performance ceramic materials and his contributions to research, teaching, and international collaboration.

Dr. Bordia is the George J. Bishop, III Chair Professor of Ceramics and Materials Engineering at Clemson. His research combines materials science with modern mathematical and computational methods, including machine learning, to improve ceramic manufacturing.

His connection with Koblenz began in 2015, through academic ties supported by the partnership between South Carolina and Rhineland-Palatinate. Dr. Bordia has helped build research cooperation between Clemson and Koblenz, serving as a Scientific Fellow, teaching master classes, and supporting research stays for early-career scholars. He is also a founding fellow of a research training group established in 2024.

At the award ceremony, university leaders and Rhineland-Palatinate’s Minister of Science, Clemens Hoch, praised Dr. Bordia’s scientific achievements and commitment to mentoring young researchers. A colloquium brought together scholars from Clemson, the Technical University of Darmstadt, and the University of Koblenz to share research connected to his work.

Dr. Bordia’s career spans India, Germany, and the United States. After earning his doctorate at Cornell University, he worked at DuPont and held a professorship at the University of Washington before joining Clemson in 2013. He has published more than 190 scientific articles and holds six patents.

The university says it hopes the honor will deepen cooperation between Koblenz and Clemson and encourage new partnerships across disciplines.
