Joshlynn Graham is a sophomore Industrial Engineering major from Rock Hill, SC. Prior to her admissions process, she had no interest in attending Clemson but decided to make an impulsive decision after doing some research on its engineering program and the amount of diversity inclusion clubs/ programs, Clemson had to offer. Since she has been here, she has been blessed with the opportunity to be a part of the PEER & WISE community and a CONNECTIONS mentee and mentor. Landing her a few different work-study opportunities as well as internship opportunities within the program. In the future, she hopes to use the opportunities she has been given to empower and encourage other female students to not only attend Clemson University but to also get involved.

AAAS S-STEM Resource & Evaluation Center (REC) Launch

AAAS is excited to launch the new S-STEM REC! Established with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF: DUE-2224093), the REC supports S-STEM grant awardees and scholars, and works to increase the overall effectiveness of the NSF S-STEM portfolio. Specifically, the REC will provide:

1. Context-conscious resources, knowledge, and connections to support S-STEM Network program leadership.
2. Professional development and connection to career building opportunities for S-STEM scholars.
3. Portfolio-wide synthesis of outcomes and broad dissemination of findings to support evidence-based decision making across the STEM ecosystem

The REC includes five essential components: an asynchronous virtual community; a public-facing online presence; an in-person annual scholar’s meeting; a technical assistance suite; and an integrated evaluation and research framework. NSF, USDA, and EPA-funded Doctoral Research Assistant Positions

Multiple doctoral research assistant positions are open, funded by National Science Foundation, US Department of Agriculture (USDA-NIFA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). STEM Ambassador Recruitment for My STEM My Story Project

Two colleagues, Renee Lyons and Corliss Outley, and I recently received a nearly $2 million NSF grant for a project called My STEM My Story. We will be working with Tillery, NC, community members to develop a graphic novel titled “When Spiderwebs Unite” that tells Tillery’s story about their engagement with environmental justice. It will be the basis for an afterschool STEM club that empowers African American youth to identify challenges in their own communities, conduct scientific investigations, and create and implement action plans to address those issues. We are hiring eight (8) undergraduate students as UPIC interns who will work as STEM ambassadors and another as marketing/social media/website editor intern for the project during the 2023-2024 academic year. We are especially interested in talking with students of color about this opportunity and ask that you help connect us to students who would be interested in applying for these positions.

Why opt for Clemson?

I decided on Clemson for the overwhelming sense of family I felt when visiting here. As a freshman, moving 900 miles away from home can be scary, but I knew Clemson would feel like a home away from home. Clemson also has a reputable engineering program specializing in bioengineering and has a ton of resources available for engineering students. I knew I would fit right in here and have loved every year since.

Future Goals? 

I hope to work in medical device development or biomechanical analysis.

CECAS and PEER/WISE involvement?

I worked as a UPIC intern under Brittany Sanders for the PEER/WISE department during my senior year. I am working again with Brittany this year as the Graduate Project Coordinator for GE’s Next Engineers Greenville program.

I studied abroad in Valencia, Spain, during my sophomore year (2019).

How were they recruited?: I am a fifth generation Clemson student, so my family encouraged me to visit and Clemson had all the experiences I wanted.

Future Goals: I am pursuing a combined bachelors/masters right now and I hope to work in the prosthetics or biomechanics industry once I graduate!

CECAS and PEER/WISE involvement: I am a student researcher in Dr. Desjardins’ lab, working on a prosthetic. This is my third semester working for PEER/WISE!
