SOCIAL Academy Fellows posed in front of corn field at the Edisto Research and Education Center in Blackville, South Carolina

This program is designed to recruit 8th grade social studies teachers from schools across South Carolina. The objectives of the project are:

  1. Engage the teacher fellows in an immersive professional development experience through a summer tour highlighting modern agricultural production, thereby connecting them to agricultural occupations, culture, and innovations.
  2. Provide an online graduate course for the teacher fellows to develop lesson plans and tools to integrate the agriculture and history curricula and achieve state social studies standards for 8th grade students, and
  3. Evaluate the extent to which teacher fellows:
    • integrate history and agriculture in their social studies curricula;
    • improve their knowledge of food and agricultural sciences (FAS) careers; and
    • use SOCIAL Studies Academy curricula tools for inquiry-based learning.
