In celebration of International Tiger Day on July 29, the Tigers United University Consortium (comprised of Auburn, Clemson, LSU and Mizzou) is hosting a Zoom webinar on Aug. 1, 2023 at 10 a.m. EST with conservation scientist, Sandeep Sharma, Ph.D.

With over a decade of field experience and dozens of publications related to tiger conservation, Sandeep is an emerging leader in conservation science. Together with his partner, Dr. Trishna Dutta, Sandeep pioneered the groundbreaking study of genetic connectivity among tigers and other large carnivores in human-dominated landscapes in India. Sandeep’s conservation research career developed under the guidance of Dr. John Seidensticker – his Ph.D. mentor – at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Building upon this foundation, he conducted post-doctoral research at the Institute for Parks at Clemson University. Sandeep’s journey eventually led him back to the Smithsonian, where he spent three years leading conservation science and research efforts for a USAID funded project on mangrove tigers in Bangladesh.

He also worked as the ‘Lead Scientist-Land program’ with The Nature Conservancy India, and was a tiger research and monitoring consultant with WWF. He is now based in Germany, where he works at iDiv – the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research, focusing on the realm of Rewilding in Europe, alongside engaging in other significant conservation research and capacity building projects across South and Southeast Asia.

Sandeep is known for his quiet leadership, staying out of the political fray, while publishing thoughtful and impactful research that directly addresses knotty conservation problems. He and Trishna proudly carry forward the legacy of their mentor, Dr. John Seidensticker who, along with Dr. Rajesh Gopal was just awarded the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Global Tiger Initiative Council.
