Senior Club Championship
Your 28th annual senior club championship will take place Friday & Saturday, October 9 & 10. Two age divisions will compete for their respective titles. If you are 55 or older, you qualify for the senior division. If you are 70 or older, you qualify for the super senior division. Entry fee is $20 per golfer, and you may only play in one of the two divisions. This is straight stroke play. No handicaps, cumulative 36-hole championship. Call the golf shop to sign up before the deadline on Thursday, October 8th. Defending senior champion is Ron Schroder, and defending super senior champion is Jack Mansmann.

Junior Club Championship Results
Your 2026 junior champions are:
Coleman Simoneaux 15-17 Division Champion
Charles McCord 12-14 Division Champion
Grant Teasley 11-U Division Champion
These young men battled it out in the late evening to post scores and win their respective titles last month. Thanks also to the parents who came out to support their hard work this year!
Senior Interclub Team Report
Unfortunately, our senior division team went down in defeat in the “Round of 16” in the CGA Playoffs. They were defeated by a strong team from Lake Marion Golf Club in North Carolina. Big shout-out to Captain Rick Miller for a job well done. Better luck next year!
Golf Cart Usage
We are experiencing an increase in the number of golfers using two golf carts, with only two players each. The additional wear on the golf course, resulting from this unnecessary traffic, is beginning to show. Please pair up with the rest of your players and only use one golf cart when you have two riders in a group. Don Garrett thanks you!
Palmer Mills
Unfortunately for us, Palmer Mills is leaving The Walker Course later this month to take a sales position in the Charleston area. Be sure to drop by and wish him well. His last day on the job here will be Monday, October 12th. The search for our next assistant golf professional is underway.
Aces Wild
September 2nd was a good day for members at The Walker Course, especially if you were playing hole #4. TWO
holes-in-one were reported on that hole! First, Andy Mercer scored his ace from 204 yards (purple tees) with his Titleist 21* Hybrid. Witnessing his first ever ace were: Keith Crownover, Frank Lamson-Scribner, and Mickey Plyler.
A few groups later, Alan Pollenz also scored his first hole-in-one on the same hole. with a 147-yard Taylormade 6-iron shot. Witnessing his perfect shot were Tommy Thompson, Bob Burnside, and Steve Klenkson.
A couple of weeks later, on September 23rd, Janna Smith scored her first career hole-in-one on hole # 4 with an 84-yard hybrid shot rolling into the cup. Witnessing her ace were: Janal Walton, Tami Thompson, and Marti Duda. Another great shot!
Unfortunately, none of these three acers were in the Member’s Hole-In-One Club, so the jackpot continues to grow. Late Ace Report
Apologies for the late recognition of Keith Crownover, who scored his fourth career ace on July 10th. Mr.
Crownover’s ace came on hole #17 with a 180-yard Cobra 4-hybrid, witnessed by Greg Carroll, Spencer Hynd, and Andy
Mercer. Better late than never!
Pool Season Ending
Another safe season of swimming has come to an end. The conference center complex swimming pool will close for the season on Sunday, October 4th. We hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful swimming pool complex.
Archie Gentry (1944-2026)
We lost another veteran starter/ranger last month. US Army (retired), Archie Gentry worked our Tuesday morning shifts from 1998 until late 2021. As an active member of the Crabtree golf group, he was known for his strong voice, his promptness, and always having the latest golf equipment first! He is survived by his wife Jayne, daughter Angie, and granddaughter Holly. Rest in peace, “Chief.”
Len” Byrne Passing
We were recently informed of Mr. Leonard Byrne’s passing. Mr. Byrne was a Life member of The Walker Course, joining in 1994 before the course was completed. Our condolences to his surviving family members.
Robert Charles “Bob” Pierce (1942-2026)
Life member Bob Pierce passed away on August 20th. An active member for many years, Mr. Pierce was a known fierce competitor on the golf course. Mr. Pierce owned Anderson Rent-All for many years before his retirement. His wife, Lynda and a large family survive him.

September Status
September Status
September was hot, but fall finally arrived the last week of the month. We saw lots of play and several outings.
Goals accomplished this month include:
- Performed a micro-tine aerification of the greens on August 31st.
- Made our first application of fungicide to the greens, tees and fairways, to control spring dead spot.
- Made our final growth regulator application to tees, fairways and roughs.
- Applied a growth regulator to the greens to control seed heads.
- Re-seeded the natural area to the right of 5 tees with tall fescue
- Topdressed the greens two times.
Raised the height of cut slightly on tees and fairways around mid-month to allow some additional growth prior to the onset of dormancy. This helps bermudagrass survive the cold months of the year, when it is not actively growing, and gives us a better base to withstand traffic during those months.
October Goals
October is the month we transition from the growing season and prepare the turf for dormancy. Mowing heights are raised, and fungicide applications are made to help protect the turf for its winter nap. It’s also the month that leaves begin to fall faster than we can clean them up! Please bear with us.
Other things planned for October include:
- Treat the course for fire ants. The cooler temperatures will bring them to the surface.
- Make the second application of fungicide to tees, greens and fairways to control spring dead spot.
- Catch up on general trimming and detail work.
- Edge all bunkers.
- Re-seed the natural area between holes 2 & 6 with tall fescue, as well as several other areas on 3, 11, 13 & 14. In addition, new areas are being added to 7 and to the area behind 8 green.
Overseeding
Overseeding of tees is scheduled for October 12th, weather permitting.
Once again, we will only be seeding a couple of the Par 3’s. As we did prior to last year, we are overseeding holes 8 & 17 and using the hitting mats on 4 & 12. You may recall we flipped the holes seeded versus mats last year to allow us to clean up the poa annua weed infestation on holes 8 & 17 after 30 consecutive years of overseeding.
In addition, we will be overseeding the practice tee this year.
Please keep in mind that the overseeded tees will be soggy as we water lightly and frequently to promote rapid
germination and establishment.
We appreciate your compliance with the use of the mats. They should be deployed in late October.
Driving Range Update
Last month, a net was installed on the back right of the range to protect against balls headed for Old Stadium Road. This month, we will begin the landscaping to screen the net and the installation of permanent signs and landscaping at the Lake Drive entrance. This work is scheduled to begin the week of October 12th and take approximately 5-6 weeks to complete.
As I mentioned above, we will be overseeding the practice tee the week of October 12th. Once all the landscaping work is complete, the ryegrass should be mature enough to begin using the main grass tee and fully open the range.
