The Institute’s founding focus was the field of motorsports, and that legacy continues to be honored through our support, promotion and advancement of the motorsports discipline at Clemson. In 2026, RHBSSI will highlight student organizations, faculty, and alumni working within motorsports on campus and in the field who are making their mark in the racing world and Driving Performance Forward.

The Robert H. Brooks Sports Science Institute (RHBSSI) was founded in 1994 with a series of donations from Robert H. Brooks ’60 to Clemson University. The Institute was established to honor the memory of members of Brooks’ NASCAR team, including his son Mark Brooks, ’91, co-workers Dan Duncan and Charlie Campbell, and NASCAR Cup Series Champion Alan Kulwicki, who died in a plane crash on April 1, 1993.
