Message from the Chair

December 3, 2020

Greetings from Clemson’s Glenn Department of Civil Engineering to our alumni, friends, students, and colleagues across the globe.  2020 has been anything but 2020.  We have gone through a lot in a single year.  From adapting to learning and discovery under the cloud of a pandemic to absorbing the severe financial impacts on our operations.  The silver lining for us is that these crises have exposed our strong resilience, flexibility, and spirit of innovation, which reaffirm my excitement as Chair to continue leading this department to the next higher ground.

We have a team of faculty, staff, and students focusing on fostering student engagement, on cultivating a sense of community, a heightened sense of belongingness, and a strong sense of civil engineering identity.  We are focused on developing a JEDI report card, where JEDI stands for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.  We are focused on weaving the Alumni Everyday philosophy into our routine operations to ensure we produce not just graduates, but Clemson Multipliers, who continue to give back to their alma mater long after they leave campus.  We are focused on producing career-ready Civil Engineering professionals prepared to have a global impact.  We are focused on partnering with alumni and friends to underpin society by addressing its grand challenges through learning and discovery. We are, indeed, very positive about our bright future ahead.  I am pleased to share in this newsletter some of our recent highlights.
