2012 Memorials

Larry Abernathy, 1948 – 2012
Visiting Professor of Counselor Education. Mayor of Clemson.  A graduate of Clemson University, he served in city government for over 30 years.  During his tenure, both the city and the university experienced significant growth but maintained its ‘village’ quality.  He was known throughout the country for his leadership with town ‘n gown issues.

 

Earl Thomas Carpenter, passed away January 5, 2012
Chair and Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Education. Dr. Carpenter was originally from Hannibal, Missouri. Upon his retirement from Clemson University where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, Dr. Carpenter owned and operated Carpenter Cleaners in Simpsonville, SC. He served in the Army during WWII, earning two Bronze Stars. He also was a member of the Rotary Club.

 

Forrest Christopher Alley, 1929 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering.  Originally from Alabama, he held degrees from Auburn University and UNC- Chapel Hill.  He retired from Clemson in 1989 after 31 years of teaching.  He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

 

Bernard I. Bayer, 1933 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Library Science.  He became active in the Emeritus College upon moving to the area after his retirement from Ohio State University.  Born and raised in Chicago, he held degrees from the University of Illinois and Case Western Reserve.  He was an instructor at the Naval Air Technical Training Center as well as a newspaper writer and reporter in Chicago.

 

Louis Lee Henry, 1931 – 2012
Professor Emeritus of English.  A native of Clemson, he graduated from the University in 1953.  After serving in the Army, he received advanced degrees from Florida State University and returned to Clemson where he taught English from 1958 – 1990.  He was the first Alumni Master Teacher and a recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award.

 

Mark S. Henry, 1946 – 2012
Professor Emeritus of Agriculture and Applied Economics.  Raised in Kansas, he completed his education at Kansas State University.  He began his career in applied economics in 1967 in Botswana.  He came to Clemson in 1978 and remained an active in research until his death.

 

Sophia Elizabeth Sullivan, 1916-2012
Librarian Emeritus. Ms. Sullivan received her MS in Library and Information Sciences form the University of Illinois. She worked at the CU libraries as the librarian in charge of cataloging for the last fourteen years before her retirement. She also served for three years on the CU Faculty Senate. In her earlier year, Ms. Sullivan had been a teacher at Fountain Inn High School and later was head librarian at the Alabama State Teachers College, chief of technical processing at the library of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and head of cataloging at the University of Georgia Law Library. She held several offices in the Alabama Library Association.

 

James A. Turner, Jr., 1937 – 2012
Professor Emeritus of Accounting.  He taught accounting at Clemson from 1974 to 1994.  Because of his passion for teaching, he established the James A. Turner Award in Federal Taxation, which is given annually to a student with a promising career in the accounting profession.

2011 Memorials

Reginald Andrew Baumgardner, 1935 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Horticulture. Graduated from Clemson and went on to receive M.S. and Ph.D. from University of Maryland. Originally from Taylors, S.C. Was active in First Baptist Church of Clemson. Had a passion for fishing and raising daylilies.

 

Clayton Aucoin, 1930 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Science. Came to Clemson in 1963. Served as Dean of the College of Physical and Mathematical Science. Was known for his dedication to students and faculty development.

 

Beverly Brandon Bookmyer, 1921-2011
Professor Emerita of Physics and Astronomy. She obtained her PhD in astronomy from the University of Pennsylvania, completing a thesis titled, “A Study of Photoelectric Observations of SW Lacertae,” under the supervision of Leendert Binnendijik. She held positions at Villanova University and the University of Arizona before joining the Department  of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University in 1971. She continued her photoelectric work at CU until her retirement in 1989, having published more that 50 research papers during her career.

 

Harold N. Cooledge, Jr., 1923 – 2011
Alumni Professor Emeritus of Art and Architectural History. A graduate of Harvard University. Spent 40 years on the faculty at Clemson. He was instrumental in the effort to restore Thomas Green Clemson’s collection of paintings. Also remembered for his passion of music and the stage.

 

Bill Gravely Durham, 1928 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Spanish. Taught at both secondary and college levels. Received a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Spain. Was a member of the first U.S. Air Force quartet and later sang with the Greenville Chorale for 42 years.

 

John Patrick Fulmer, 1924 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Horticulture. Was responsible for development of the Ornamental Gardens at Clemson as well as the Southeastern Nurseryman’s Association. After retirement, he was Director of Gardens at the Baha’i World Center in Israel for six years. Was a WWII Navy Veteran.

 

Nancy Hardesty, 1942 – 2011
Professor Emerita of Religion. Held a Ph.D. in the history of Christianity from the University of Chicago. Author of seven books and co-founder of the Evangelical and Ecumenical Women’s Caucus for which she was serving as secretary at the time of her death.

 

James C. Hite, 1941 – 2011
Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics. Came to Clemson as a student in 1959. Served on the faculty for 31 years and was a Senior Fellow in the Strom Thurmond Institute. Was an influential policy analyst in South Carolina frequently quoted by the media.

 

James Harvey Hobson, Sr., 1917 – 2011
Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. Originally from Townville. Earned Ph.D. from Emory. Was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. Tutored elementary and junior high students after retirement. Delivered Meals on Wheels. Was an avid gardener and judged flower shows throughout the Carolinas and Georgia.

 

William Garraux Hudson, 1925 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering. Began career at Clemson in 1948. Also worked for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Fought in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII. Received many honors including Alumni Master Teacher and Professor of the Year from the America Society of Mechanical Engineers.

 

Herman “Jack” Brown Jackson, Jr., 1940 – 2011
Professor Emeritus and head of the Department of Plant Industry from 1974 until his retirement in 2003. A member of the Southern and National Plant Boards and past president of the Entomological Society of America. Received the USDA Wallace Waltman Award and the American Distinguished Achievement Award in Regulatory Entomology.

 

Henry G. Lefort, 1928-2011
Professor Emeritus of Ceramic Engineering. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a 1952 graduate of Clemson University. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois. Prior to his career at Clemson, he worked for the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. and the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Livermore, CA. He was a Professor of Ceramic Engineering at Clemson University for 31 years until his retirement in 1993.

 

Robert F. Ling, 1939 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences. Born in Hong Kong. Earned a bachelor’s degree from Berea College and Ph.D. from Yale. Held visiting professorships at Vanderbilt, University of Chicago, Harvard and MIT. Author of several books and associate editor of the American Statistics Association. Was a master scuba diver.

 

Linvil Gene Rich, 1921 – 2011 Professor Emeritus of Environmental Systems Engineering and former Dean of the College of Engineering. A WWII veteran, served under General George Patton. Came to Clemson in 1960 where he was instrumental in establishing the first Ph.D. program in engineering. Research in environmental engineering is legendary. Received numerous honors and awards. Was a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

 

Douglas V. Rippy, 1942 – 2011 Professor Emeritus of Materials Science and Engineering. Served as Director of the School of Textiles, Fiber and Polymer Science. Grew up in Landrum and earned degrees from Clemson and the Air Force Institute of Technology. Retired as a Lt. Colonel.

 

Hilton V. Rogers, 1924 – 2011
Head Emeritus of Fertilizer and Analysis. Graduated with honors from Clemson in 1948 after serving in the Army Air Corps. Attended University of Wisconsin on a Kellogg Fellowship. Spent his entire career with Cooperative Extension Service. Was a member of many professional and community organizations and was Chairman of Clemson Meals on Wheels.

 

George Savitsky, passed away on March 18, 2011
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. Dr. Savitsky retired from Clemson University in 1990. He won the deep respect of his peers and was greatly admired by his many graduate students. After his retirement, he began a deeper pursuit of metaphysics. He was very fond of cooking for his close friends, philosophizing, had a passion for ferns, reciting poetry and telling stories of his childhood in China and his travels. He learned seven languages in his lifetime and during his last years “brushed up” on German so he could fully enjoy the German opera.

 

Jimmy Don Sheriff, 1940 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Accountancy and Senior Associate Dean of Commerce and Industry. Was the U.S. representative to International Business Schools headquartered in France. Graduated from the U.S. Army Command and Staff College and attended both the Army and National War Colleges. Was Chief of Plans and Operations for the S.C. National Guard.

 

William Clyde Whitten, Jr., 1925 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Economics. Started Clemson at the age of 16. Was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. Received the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars. Had an interest in genealogy and was active in restoration of the old jail in Pickens and Hagood Mill.

 

Sam G. Woods, 1926 – 2011
Professor Emeritus of Animal Science. Held appointment with Clemson Experiment Station in Blackville. Served in U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the American Legion. Retired from Clemson in 1987 after 35 years of service.

 

2010 Memorials

Blanton, Lloyd H., 1939 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Education. Lifetime member of the American Association of Educators. Received Future Farmers of America (FFA) highest honor in 2005. Graduated from Clemson in 1960; Ph.D. from Ohio State. Spent a lifetime at Clemson. Retired from U.S. Army Reserves. Was member of the Emeritus College Advisory Board.

 

Camper, Nyal Dwight, 1939 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Entomology, Soils and Plant Science. Ph.D. from N.C. State. At Clemson for 43 years. Major professor to over 50 students. Recipient of Godley-Snell Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research. Noted for cutting edge research in use of plants for pharmaceuticals.

 

Dean, Jordan A., 1912 – 2009
Professor Emeritus of Languages. Youngest of seven children; graduated from Wofford and Vanderbilt. Taught at Military Academy in Tennessee before coming to Clemson in 1937. Was in the Army during WWII, served in reserves in Clemson, and retired as Lieutenant Colonel. Retired from Clemson faculty in 1977.

 

Eskew, Elias Benton, 1922 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Agronomy. Born in Anderson County, he earned degrees from Clemson and Ohio State. He worked at Clemson for 38 years and upon retirement, volunteered for Clemson Meals on Wheels. He is the father of Extension agent Elvie Eaddy, and father-in-law of Professor Emeritus Harold Allen.

Garrison, Olin B., 1910 -2010
Director Emeritus of Agricultural Experiment Station. Received B.S. in horticulture from Clemson in 1933; M.S. from LSU, and Ph.D. from Cornell. Was first located at Edisto Experiment Station. While a student at Clemson, was charter member of Blue Key Honor Society. Was active in many organizations including Tiger Brotherhood and IPTAY.

 

Griffin, Barbara J., 1932 – 2009
Professor Emerita of Agriculture Engineering. A native of Walhalla, received M.S. from Syracuse. Served as Dean of Students at Ohio Wesleyan and Northern Illinois before coming to Clemson in 1969. Was Extension Specialist in residential housing issues. Retired 1993.

 

Hubbard, John W., 1920 -2010
Professor Emeritus, Agriculture Economics. Bachelors degree from Berea College, and M.S./Ph.D. from University of Kentucky. Worked at Clemson from 1961 – 1987. Formerly a farmer and Extension agent. Known for his interdisciplinary approach to research.

 

Hurst, Victor, 1915 – 2009
Vice President for Academic Affairs Emeritus. Degrees from Rutgers and University of Missouri. Served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. Was Alumni Distinguished Professor of Dairy Science and a member of the S.C. Dairy Association Hall of Fame. Past National Chairman of AARP and a founding member of the Emeritus College Advisory Board.

 

Kirkwood, Charles E., Jr., 1913 -2009
Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. Joined Clemson faculty in 1937 teaching math, physics, electrical engineering and before his retirement, computer science. Was a veteran of WWII and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve. Was an avid amateur radio enthusiast.

 

Marullo, Nicasio, 1930 -2010
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. Born to Sicilian immigrants in Brooklyn, NY; graduated from Queens College and Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. Post doc at California Tech. Came to Clemson in 1961. Received NSF Fellowship and continued research at Princeton, UCLA, and University of Strasbourg, France.Was contributor to team that received 1987 Nobel Price in Chemistry. Retired from Clemson in 1995.

 

McGee, Charles M., 1913 – 2009
Professor Emeritus of English. Received his B.A. degree from Furman where he lettered in golf. After serving in WWII Army Air Corps, he attended Duke University. Taught English at Clemson from 1946 to 1978.

 

Miller, Landon C., 1937 – 2009
Professor Emeritus of Horticulture. B.S. and M.S. degrees from Clemson. Ph.D. from Auburn. Retired after 31 years at Clemson. Was active in several professional associations even after retirement. Was also a volunteer at the S.C. Botanical Gardens.

 

Nicholson, James H., 1927 – 2009
Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. A native of Texas, taught at University of Texas before coming to Clemson. A member of the American Mathematical Society, he was the first Honors Professor selected by Students in the Calhoun Honors program at Clemson.

 

Nolan, Clifford N., 1925 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Agronomy. Earned a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Was a veteran of WWII with the U.S. Marine Corps. Came to Clemson as an Extension Agronomist.

 

Olive, Edward F., Sr., 1926 -2009
Professor Emeritus of Education. Originally from Louisiana. Served in U.S. Marine Corp. Was a Deacon at Clemson First Baptist Church for many years.

 

Page, Norwood R., 1919 -2010
Professor Emeritus of Agronomy. Graduated from Clemson in 1935 and served in U.S. Air Force during WWII. Later received M.S. from N.C. State and Ph.D. from University of Georgia. Was head of Agriculture Chemistry. Worked at Clemson for over 40 years.

 

Paynter, Malcolm J.B., 1939 – 2009
Professor Emeritus of Microbiology. Born in England and graduated from Sheffield University. Was founder of the Microbiology Department of Clemson where he served as chair for 21 years. Retired after 40 years at Clemson.

 

John B. Pitner, 1918 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Agronomy and Soils and Director. Received a PhD from the University of Wisconsin. Began his career as an agronomist at Mississippi State. Worked at Clemson for 32 years, first as Chair of the Department of Agronomy and Soils and then as director of the Clemson Pee Dee Research and Education Center. Worked as an agronomist with the Rockefeller Foundation in Mexico. Received an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Clemson in 1999.

 

Porter, John J., 1932 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Textile Chemistry. Originally from New Jersey, received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Georgia Tech. Taught at Clemson for 35 years.

 

Reeves, Calvin B., 1918 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Dairy Science. Served as Dairy Extension Specialist. Was inducted into Dairy Hall of Fame in 1981. Charter member of the South Carolina Dairy Tech Society. Active in Clemson Lions Club for 47 years.

 

Richardson, Joel L., 1921 – 2009
Professor Emeritus of Textile Engineering. B.S. degree from Clemson and M.S. from NC State. Joined faculty in 1948 and taught for 33 years. Visited 46 states in his RV camper.

 

Robinson, Vernon Lee, 1929-2010
Associate Professor Emeritus of Forest Resources, he earned his PhD from the University of Georgia in 1972. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Before coming to Clemson, he was a  forest scientist with the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station for thirty years. He authored or coauthored 50 publications and conducted several presentations regionally and nationally. Dr. Robinson was the founder of the East Georgia Chapter of Red Cross. He helped build eight Habitat for Humanity homes and was an active volunteer with his church.


Shalaby, Shalaby W., 1938 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Bioengineering. A native of Dairut, Egypt, he held several undergraduate and graduate degrees in the sciences. In 1993, he founded Poly-Med at the Clemson Research Park where he continued his career until his death. His area of expertise was innovative drug-delivery systems.

 

Smith, Daniel B., 1940 – 2010
Dean and Director Emeritus of Cooperative Extension. A native of Alabama with degrees from Auburn, University of Tennessee, and University of Kentucky. Worked at Clemson for 30 years as an agriculture economist.

 

Taylor, Julia Wood, 1915 – 2010
Professor Emerita of Home Economics. Graduated from Winthrop University and the University of Tennessee. Was an Extension Specialist in Interior Design. Very active in Delta kappa Gamma serving at all levels including international. Retired in 1980.

 

Tinsley, William Allan, 1933 – 2010
Professor Emeritus of Agriculture Economics. Originally from Illinois, he retired in 1993 after 21 years at Clemson. He was a pioneer in computer use for agriculture and received Clemson’s first Alumni Award for Distinguished Public Service.

 

Trevillian, Wallace D., 1918 – 2010
Dean Emeritus of Commerce and Industry. Degrees from the University of Virginia. Served in U.S. Army during WWII. Came to Clemson in 1947 and rose through the ranks from professor of economics to Dean. Retired in 1985. Is remembered for his love of students and his integrity.

 

Usrey, Malcolm O., 1930 -2010
Professor Emeritus of English for almost 30 years. Bachelors degree from Abilene Christian College, PhD from Texas Tech,  One of ten children born to a Texas farmer.
