Sandip Bhatta, a Ph.D. student in the Biosystems Engineering program and a Graduate Research Assistant in Clemson University’s Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences (EEES), was selected to receive the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Young Professional Student Sponsorship Award. The award supported his participation in the Georgia Chapter’s 2026 Fall Conference, held September 9–11 at the Jekyll Island Convention Center in Georgia.
Bhatta presented a research poster titled “A Cradle-to-Cradle Perspective on Packaging Systems: Energy Use, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and End-of-Life Pathways.” His work examines packaging systems through energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and end-of-life pathways, connecting research on sustainability with challenges in solid waste management and recycling.
The conference brought together professionals, researchers and students for technical sessions, continuing education, an exhibitor showcase and networking. For Bhatta, it was an opportunity to share his research, learn from practitioners across the solid waste and resource management sectors, and build professional connections.
He also joined the conference’s community service project at the City of Brunswick’s Roosevelt Harris, Jr., Senior Citizen Center. Working alongside fellow participants, he helped remove invasive plants and weeds, assemble and install two raised planters, and clear several wasp nests. The project continued despite rainy weather.
Bhatta thanked the SWANA-Georgia Chapter and its Young Professionals Committee for the recognition and opportunity. The experience allowed him to present his research, connect with professionals, and contribute to a community project.
