EEES Reunion at 2024 Nuclear Environmental Engineering and Science Education Workshop

The Nuclear Environmental Engineering and Science group at Clemson University is addressing a major need in the nuclear-environmental workforce. In collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Vanderbilt University, and CRESP (Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation), Clemson co-sponsored a workshop to develop strategies for growing educational programs that will meet the demand for a new generation of nuclear environmental professionals. The 2024 workshop, hosted by Vanderbilt University, included sessions on topics such as “How Should Educators Meet the Needs of Governmental and Industrial Partners?” and “How to Engage and Attract Students to the Nuclear-Environmental Field of Study.” Clemson was well represented at the workshop, including faculty and current and former students. Based on past workshops, the participants have published an article entitled “Nuclear waste Educator’s workshop: What and how do we teach about nuclear waste?, appearing in the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity.

Clemson-affiliated participants at the workshop, from left to right: Dr. Biran Powell (EEES professor), Cooper Tillman (current EEES graduate student), Dr. Sarah Donaher (EEES alum, now an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee), Kirstin Sockwell (research professor, University of Notre Dame), Chris Thompson (EEES alum, Dysart Award donor and senior advisor for the Tennessee Bureau of Environment), Dr. Brennan Ferguson (EEES alum, now an assistant professor at the University of Georgia), Dr. Stefanie Fountain (EEES alum, now a senior principal engineer at Geosyntec), & Dr. Lindsay Shuller-Nickles (EEES professor).
