The 2024 David S. Snipes/Clemson Hydrogeology Symposium had a record number of in-person and online attendees. The annual conference is the largest gathering of professionals focused on hydrogeology in the Southeast U.S. On March 28th, the Madren Center was once again filled to capacity with over 320 in-person attendees and 85 remote attendees.
The Symposium featured three concurrent sessions with 39 presentations on topics ranging from Remediation, Geophysics, Characterization, PFAS, Seismic Reflection, and Microplastics. The keynote address was given by Dr. Matthew Becker of California State University, who presented “Fiber Optic: Distributed Sensing as a Window on Subsurface Flow.” The Plenary Speaker, Joe Rossabi of Redox Tech, presented “The Evolution and Future of Subsurface Environmental Characterization and Remediation Technologies for the Past 30 Odd Years.”
Other activities on that day included a Career Kickstarter event to facilitate networking between aspiring students and experienced professionals, 39 exhibit booths and a post-Symposium mixer at the Clemson Outdoor Lab funded by the generosity of sponsors.
Along with the day of presentations, there were two field trips led by Scott Brame on March 27th & 29th to the Stumphouse Tunnel near Walhalla, SC, which included a visit to the Oconee Rock Quarry, 100-foot high Issaqueena Falls and the Brevard Fault Zone at the Chauga River.
