This project will characterize post-Helene changes in forest structure and determine whether these disturbances are outside the scope of what is typically experienced by these forests. Field surveys to monitor plants along with computer modeling will guide decisions on where forests can recover on their own and where active management such as invasive species control is needed. This project will also help assess seedling survival to help refine reforestation strategies and document threats to the persistence of endangered plant species.
