Microsoft to end support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014

by Steve Fullerton, CCIT

Beginning April 8, 2014, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP. This impacts those whose computers run on Windows XP operating systems.

What does this mean to the end-user?

  • Windows XP will no longer be patched for vulnerabilities.  This makes your computer an easy target for hackers and virus/malware producers.
  • Hardware and software manufacturers will no longer provide updates and this could lead to compatibility issues.
  • Due to the lack of updates, your data security is at a high risk.

What does this mean to Clemson University?

  • Having machines running Windows XP places our network at a high risk for attack, potentially making both intellectual and personal information vulnerable.
  • Clemson Computing and Information Technology will no longer provide access to the media to install/reinstall the XP operating system.
  • Clemson Computing and Information Technology will no longer provide end-user support.

Devices running Windows XP after April 8, 2014 are unprotected, and it is important that you migrate to a currently supported operating system.

Please contact your local support area for assistance with migrating to a newer operating system. Additional assistance is available by emailing ITHELP@clemson.edu or calling 864-656-3494.
