New spousal hire program gaining momentum

John Vitalis and Stephanie Passow

Recently wed and recently hired by Clemson University, John Vitalis and Stephanie Passow are positive proof that the university’s new spousal hire program is up and running strong. The mission of TalentSource, Clemson’s new program that engages new faculty and staff hires by offering assistance in finding spouses employment, is to “connect industry with the Clemson Family,” according to TalentSource program manager Jaz Hamilton.

John Vitalis was recruited from the University of Louisville’s Campus Housing, and was hired at Clemson as a community director—one of among nine employees living in campus housing. His wife, Stephanie, learned about the spousal hire program while John was being recruited. “The spousal hire program was uniquely designed to remove hiring obstacles while I sought to develop my career despite our move from another state, and it provided me with knowledgeable career resources that worked with me to find a meaningful position quickly,” said Stephanie, now employed in the Human Resources department with Clemson University.  “We uprooted our life, so it’s a relief to know that the Clemson Family had plans for all of us.”

John said one of the key reasons he accepted Clemson’s job offer was because it was a good move for the entire family, including the couple’s dog, Winston, whose presence makes the couples’ on-campus apartment a real home.

Clemson’s director of talent acquisition, Josh Brown, appreciates the university’s commitment to establishing such an important program. “Thanks to Jaz’s focused efforts, this program is really getting traction and anyone who comes to Clemson as a result of a spouse being hired by Clemson will have a strong career advocate to leverage our relationships throughout the upstate,” says Brown. “When we say, ‘Clemson’s Family is growing,’ sometimes we mean by two at a time!”
