Inside Clemson

Tunnel of Oppression organizers seeking your stories

By Jason Combs
Assistant Director, Emerging Scholars

Each year, as part of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, a committee of students, faculty and staff host the Tunnel of Oppression event. The Tunnel of Oppression is a simulation, acted out by members of our campus community that depict real-life scenarios of power, privilege and oppression experienced by marginalized populations in our society. Past years scenes highlighted issues such a racism, homophobia, and college rape culture.

This year, we invite everyone to submit a script or story that depicts themes from, but not limited to, the list below:
-Race
-Sexual orientation
-Religion
-Ableism
-Gender
-Socio-economic Status
-Age
-National Origin
-First Language

The scripts/stories selected will win a $75 monetary award. Please submit your script/story in a Word document and e-mail them to Navi Kaur or Becky Morgan. If you would prefer a more anonymous form of submission you can bring hard copies to the Gantt Multicultural Center (Brackett 300) and leave them at the front desk. All script ideas are due by Friday, Nov. 11. If you have any questions or would like an example of a script from a previous Tunnel experience, please let us know. More detailed information about Tunnel of Oppression is provided below.

Tunnel of Oppression will be held from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan 17, 2017 in the Hendrix Student Center, Ballrooms A & B.
