Heart of a Tiger: Katelyn Anthony’s Courageous Clemson Journey

Katelyn Anthony’s path to earning her MBA is one defined by resilience, faith and an

extraordinary amount of courage. A May 2025 graduate of the MBA Corporate program through

Clemson University, Katelyn’s journey is one that extends far beyond the classroom. After

graduating from Anderson University in 2015 with a degree in elementary education, Katelyn

began what she thought would be her lifelong career as a teacher. However, during her very first

year in the classroom, her life changed dramatically when she became seriously ill and was

diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Forced to step away from teaching, she entered a long

period of uncertainty that would last nearly six years. Eventually, Katelyn knew one thing for

certain. If she was going to take the next step forward, she needed to further her education. She

had always dreamed of attending Clemson, and the flexibility of the online MBA program made

that dream possible. Enrolling in the Clemson MBA became not just an academic decision, but a

personal turning point.

When asked about the most impactful part of the Clemson MBA experience, Katelyn doesn’t

hesitate. “For me, it was the people and the incredible support from the program,” she shared.

Halfway through her MBA journey, Katelyn received life-altering news: she would be placed on

the heart transplant list. During this overwhelming moment, her advisor, Carson Watts,

immediately stepped in to help her navigate both her health crisis and her academic

responsibilities. Shortly after, Katelyn underwent a heart transplant while still actively enrolled

in the program. In February, she found herself completing coursework from her hospital bed.

Despite the challenges, her classmates and the Clemson MBA faculty rallied around her, offering

encouragement, flexibility and unwavering support every step of the way. One of the most

powerful moments from her journey came when she took her first steps in the ICU after her

transplant. She shared the milestone in her group chat, and her classmates celebrated alongside

her which is a reflection of the deep bond she built within the program. “It was incredibly

difficult balancing school and recovery,” Katelyn said. “But everyone was so understanding and

supportive. I truly could not have done it without them.”

Today, Katelyn serves as a Marketing and Agency Development Manager for South Carolina at

SmartChoice. Her connection to the company runs deep. Her late mother was one of the first

employees hired there, giving Katelyn a powerful personal tie to the organization long before she

ever worked there herself. In a twist that feels destined, after being involved in a car accident,

Katelyn reached out to Deborah at SmartChoice, and that phone call ultimately led to her landing

her current role. In her position, Katelyn focuses on inside agency development, working closely

with others to ensure they are meeting goals, growing effectively and operating strategically. The

leadership mindset she gained from the MBA program plays a critical role in how she

approaches her work today. “The biggest thing I carry with me from the MBA is the ability to look at

challenges from a high-level management perspective,” she said. “I also gained networking experience

and truly learned the importance of the Clemson family.” Katelyn’s goals for the future are deeply rooted

in service and leadership. She hopes to continue stepping into greater leadership roles and, just as

importantly, to “pay it forward” by supporting others walking difficult paths. Outside of work, she is

actively involved in her community with serving in children’s ministry at The Church Gathering. She also

serves as a mentor with Transplant Talk SC, using her own experience to guide and encourage others

awaiting or recovering from transplants.

For those considering the Clemson MBA, Katelyn offers simple but powerful advice: “Sign up

and take the step. Don’t be afraid to reach out and use the resources the program provides. The

support is real, and it makes all the difference.” From navigating life-threatening illness to

earning her MBA and stepping into leadership, Katelyn Anthony’s story is a testament to

perseverance, faith and the power of community. Her journey exemplifies what it truly means to

be part of the Clemson family and the lifelong impact that support can have.
