Mario Smith, a current student in Clemson’s MBA Online program, is set to graduate this upcoming August. Throughout his time in the program, Mario has embraced every opportunity available to him—whether that meant earning the Business Analytics certificate, studying abroad at IESEG, participating in the Oxford program or attending Clemson MBA events and networking opportunities. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that online students in the Clemson MBA program have access to the same transformative experiences and opportunities as in-person students.
From the very beginning, Mario approached the program with a desire to grow both personally and professionally. One course in particular, Organizational Behavior, became one of the most impactful experiences of his MBA journey. Even while studying abroad at IESEG and learning about multicultural relationships and human resources, he found himself consistently applying course concepts to real-world situations and leadership challenges in his career.
Mario explained that he shared these insights with his VP, who immediately saw the value and asked him to teach these concepts to leaders across the organization. He ended up coordinating several weeks of Organizational Behavior training for more than 20 leaders across multiple states; a direct example of how Clemson’s coursework translated into real workplace improvement. He continues by saying there are “not enough positive words” to describe the impact the class had on him.

That ability to immediately translate classroom learning into practical application became one of the defining aspects of Mario’s Clemson MBA experience. While he had already built a successful career and spent 16 years with the same company after graduating from college, the MBA program helped him realize there was still so much more to learn and explore. “The program did more than I expected,” Mario shares. “I didn’t necessarily need an MBA to move up in my company, but I started thinking strategically about how to gain a broader perspective and develop stronger leadership skills.”
For Mario, the Clemson MBA offered something many workplaces cannot. “The knowledge you receive, many companies can’t give it to you, not because they don’t want to, but because they don’t know how,” he says. As organizations continue to adapt to multigenerational workforces and evolving leadership dynamics, Mario believes that the Clemson MBA equips students not only with knowledge but also with the ability to apply it effectively. “Clemson gives you the knowledge, but they also teach you how to apply it. It gives you what the job cannot give you.”
As he progressed through the program and added experiences, such as the Business Analytics certificate, Mario began to see how much broader his opportunities could be. That realization became even clearer during Clemson MBA’s Oxford study abroad program, which he describes as a turning point in both his personal and professional growth.
Returning to the workforce after Oxford felt different because his perspective on leadership and communication had shifted significantly. “You learn your worth in the Clemson MBA program,” he reflects. “Oxford really drove that information home to me. It changed how I lead, how I interact with people and helped me realize there’s more that I want to do.”

The Oxford experience sparked an even deeper interest in international business, leadership and diplomacy. Following changes in his professional circumstances, Mario decided to pursue the opportunity to study abroad at IESEG and deepen his international business experience.
At IESEG, Mario worked alongside students from around the world while learning from professors with diverse global perspectives. Even in such a competitive and international environment, he noticed something unique about Clemson MBA students. “I consistently felt well-prepared because of the foundation Clemson provided. The coursework gave other students and me from Clemson the academic strength and confidence to participate at a high level in a very competitive international environment, which we did well.”
Those experiences abroad continued shaping Mario’s long-term goals and eventually fueled his growing interest in diplomacy and government work. Clemson’s international partnerships and networking opportunities helped open doors, but Mario also recognized the importance of taking initiative and building relationships intentionally.
“You have to build your connections,” he says. “I had to learn how to expand my network and tailor my LinkedIn profile toward diplomacy.”
Through networking and outreach, Mario has connected with former ambassadors and government professionals, gaining valuable insights into diplomacy and public service. Along the way, he has also learned how to translate his business and project management experience into language and skills relevant to government sectors. Looking ahead, Mario hopes to eventually transition into politics, beginning with volunteer work for political campaigns and continuing to build experience in the field.

Alongside his incredible international experiences and career pivots, Mario consistently emphasizes one important message: online students in the Clemson MBA program have access to every opportunity the program offers.
“During orientation weekend, you begin building connections immediately,” he explains. “Those are people you continue to have classes with and relationships you can build throughout the program.”
From study abroad opportunities like Oxford and IESEG to networking events and leadership development, Mario stresses that the Clemson MBA creates opportunities for every student willing to pursue them. “Clemson always gives you the chance to make connections and explore different opportunities,” he says. “But it’s on you as an individual to take advantage of them and cultivate what you need to succeed.”
For current and prospective students, Mario’s advice is simple but impactful: “Take full advantage of every opportunity you have during this experience.” He views the MBA journey as a unique season of life that creates a safe environment to learn, grow, and challenge yourself before stepping back into the workforce.
“Your job right now is to absorb information,” Mario says. “Knowledge changes the way you think, lead and see the world.”
Mario Smith’s story reflects the true impact of the Clemson MBA experience. His journey is one of growth, adaptability, courage and ambition—proof that when students fully embrace every opportunity placed before them, the possibilities are limitless.
