Yue Wang Names Associate Dean For Research

Yue Wang

Yue Wang has been selected to serve as the new associate dean for research in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences.

Dr. Wang has made significant contributions to engineering both at Clemson University and beyond. She is the Warren H. Owen-Duke Energy Professor and director of the Intelligent and Interdisciplinary Research laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. For the past year, she has held the prestigious role of program director for the Dynamics, Control and Systems Diagnostics program and the Foundational Research in Robotics program at the National Science Foundation (NSF), where she has helped shape the future of research and education nationwide.

Dr. Wang will begin serving as associate dean of research after concluding her assignment with the NSF. Until then, Daniel L. Noneaker will continue his service as the associate dean of research, along with his new role as senior associate dean for strategic initiatives and faculty affairs. I extend my heartfelt thanks to him for his dedicated service and leadership, which has been crucial throughout his tenure.

Dr. Wang’s research interests focus on the intersection of systems and controls, formal methods, and machine learning, particularly in the contexts of human-robot interaction, autonomous systems, and multi-robot systems. Her research contributions include trust-based control for human-robot collaboration systems, collaborative robotics for manufacturing, multi-robot symbolic motion planning, and human-aware control and learning for autonomous driving. She has authored over 100 journal publications, peer-reviewed conference papers and books, including two works that won best paper awards and one that was a top-cited paper. Her research has received over 3,000 citations and has garnered support from a wide range of federal agencies and industry. Her grants include the NSF CAREER Award and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Program Award. She is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and a senior member of IEEE. Additionally, Dr. Wang serves as an associate editor and guest editor for several IEEE and ASME journals. Her work has been featured in numerous publications, including ASEE First Bell.

Dr. Wang’s appointment follows a search by a committee that identified exceptional candidates. I would like to extend my gratitude to the members of the committee, co-chaired by Delphine Dean and Jesus M. de la Garza, for their diligent work.

As associate dean, Dr. Wang will bring a wealth of experience and leadership skills to guide the college’s research initiatives, fostering innovation and collaboration across departments and external partners. Her vision will be instrumental in advancing our college’s research mission, and I look forward to working with her as associate dean of research.
