Clemson Online Announces New CU on Foot App

November 30, 2015

Interactive and informative project tells Clemson’s story in a very 21st Century way

A new app aims to bring the history of Clemson University to visitors on campus, or anywhere else in the world.

CU On Foot – available in the Apple Store and on Google Play – features audio, video, text, and photographic accounts to tell the stories behind the present landmarks at Clemson University. Visitors on campus can use location based services through the app to connect with landmarks near them. Additionally, anyone can navigate the app by popular campus sites or by topics to take a virtual tour of Clemson’s history and historic sites.

The project started when History Professor Jerry Reel proposed that Clemson Online create an online history course with audio and video content. As the course developed, Clemson Online decided to spearhead a project to make Dr. Reel’s engaging content available to a wider audience. With the addition of Dr. Rhondda Thomas and Dr. Andrea Fraser, Clemson history comes alive through content narrated by respected Clemson scholars in combination with early Clemson photography and up-to-date stories about famous campus landmarks.

The app features an interactive map as well as navigation by sites or by topics. Such topics include:

  • Military history
  • Thomas Green Clemson
  • Cherokee history
  • Plantation history
  • Sports
  • African American history
  • 20th Century history
  • Clemson College founding
  • Revolutionary War history
  • Academic buildings

Though available for anyone now, the app will continue to undergo development as Clemson Online expands the content to reflect updated historical data and new discoveries.

“The CU on Foot app has been a great opportunity to collaborate with staff across campus,” said Clemson Online Executive Director Witt Salley. “As our online programs expand and both visitors and students alike seek to integrate their educational experience with the wider world, the CU on Foot app provides a topical and engaging tool for anyone to connect with Clemson from anywhere.” Aside from enhancing visitors’ and students’ experiences on campus, Salley says he hopes the app will provide a tool for distance students to connect with their university from afar.

CU on Foot is a free download and is available now in both the Apple and Google Play stores. Users are encouraged to offer insight, feedback, and requests for further topics as the app is continually updated.
