The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Program is a national grants and education program that seeks to support farmers, ranchers, researchers, and educators who are improving the sustainability of U.S. agriculture.
The SARE Program is divided into four different regions that operate as separate entities and run grant programs for their states. South Carolina falls within the Southern SARE Region. The National SARE Program, the Southern SARE Program, and the SC SARE Program are three separate programs.
The South Carolina SARE (SC SARE) Program is headquartered at Clemson’s Pee Dee Research and Education Center in Florence, SC and is co-coordinated by the Clemson Cooperative Extension Service and the SC State 1890 Extension Program.
SC SARE offers funding opportunities to ag. professionals through the SARE Professional Development Program. These grants facilitate training of ag. professionals who will in turn be responsible for delivering trainings and demonstrations to farmers, small business owners, homeowners, students, etc. These grants are for “train-the-trainer” type activities and are only available to SC citizens.

The Southern SARE Program offers an array of programs ranging from research grants to producer grants. Grants from Southern SARE include significantly higher award amounts. These grants are also more competitive as applicants are competing regionally as opposed to in-state.
