Shaoni Dasgupta ’21 receives the Blue Ribbon Award

After earning her degree at Clemson University in 2021 in Biological Sciences and a minor in Genetics, she went on to continue her education at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dasgupta received a Blue Ribbon Award at this year’s Association for Clinical and Translational Science (ACTS) Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Shaoni was recognized for her accepted abstracts and presented her research during the ACTS poster sessions. The Blue Ribbon Award honors TL1 trainees with outstanding poster submissions and is awarded to a select group whose work demonstrates excellence in translational science.

Kate Ott ’20 in medical school

After earning her degree at Clemson University in 2020, she went on to earn a master’s degree in biomedical sciences from the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine and is now in her second year of medical school at MUSC in Charleston.

Laura Brenskelle ’12 completed Ph.D. in Zoology

She completed her Ph.D. in Zoology at the University of Florida in 2021 and is working as a contractor with NOAA’s U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). She is a physical scientist and supports IOOS’s data management and marine life programs.

Claudia Heinsohn ’84, M ’89 awarded for lifetime achievements

Claudia Heinsohn has been honored with one of this year’s PCT (Pest Control Technology) Syngenta Crown Leadership Awards for lifetime and career contributions to and achievements in the Pest Management Industry. This award will be presented at the annual National Pest Management Association’s (PestWorld) Convention to be held in Denver, Colorado, on October 23.

Michael E. Newman ’78 named president of the D.C. Science Writers Association

Michael E. Newman (B.S. Microbiology, 1978) is serving as the 2024-2025 president of the D.C. Science Writers Association (DCSWA), the nation’s largest regional organization bringing together science, medical and technology journalists, writers, public information officers, and audio and video producers through socializing, networking, science-based tours and events, and professional development workshops. Newman, who is the senior public affairs officer and medical communicator for Johns Hopkins Medicine, also has been selected to co-chair the Science Writers Congress, a network of regional science writers associations across the country, for the next two years.
