Clemson’s Master’s programs in Economics may be of interest to students in Material Science and Engineering who are considering careers in technology, analytics, consulting, finance, product management, energy, or data-driven strategy.
Clemson offers both an M.A. in Economics and an M.S. in Economic Analytics, which focus on:
- decision-making under uncertainty,
- market structure and competition,
- international trade and policy,
- data analysis and applied economic analytics.
To give one concrete example: many of the tools taught in these programs complement technical training in materials science and engineering. Students learn how to use data analytics and economic models to evaluate materials markets, assess demand for new materials and processes, and analyze costs, pricing, scale economies, and investment decisions. They study how market structure, supply chains, intellectual property, and regulation affect innovation and commercialization in industries such as advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, energy storage, composites, and sustainable materials—skills that are valuable for engineers moving into leadership, analytics, consulting, and technology-focused roles.
Key highlights:
- A Bachelor’s-to-Master’s option is available so that classes can begin before you complete your bachelor’s degree.
- Flexible degree timelines.
- Graduates have gone on to positions in consulting, analytics, finance, policy, and international business-related roles (see the attached flyer for examples).
- Capstone options include research projects, internships, or a thesis.
