Animals and Agriculture – Youth Livestock

The South Carolina 4-H Poultry Projects have gained popularity in providing youth experiences to raise day-old chicks in the 4-H Pullet Chain, or maintain their current backyard flock in the 4-H Laying Flock Project. Members work on improving their knowledge about poultry management, record keeping, showing poultry, life skills, and daily caring for their flock. They record their daily work in a project record book and have the opportunity to compete in several different competitions annually. However, in 2020, 4-H members had the opportunity for a unique virtual competition by showcasing their own backyard coops and poultry demonstrations. John Jarrett II from Union County won the Coop Tour Video contest and Jacob Owens, from Orangeburg County, won top honors with his Video Demonstration on how to properly show a chicken. All of the entries in the virtual contest gave an excellent tour or demonstration on their 4-H project!

The 2021 4-H Poultry Projects will kick-off in May and South Carolina 4-Hers are looking forward to another exciting year of hands-on learning with their backyard birds. The project will include daily flock management, record keeping, showmanship, and competitions.
