Since 2006, Clemson University Landscape Architecture faculty and students have been collaborating with international counterparts in parallel, cross-cultural, design studios focusing on community engagement and design for important heritage and development sites in the world. This studio, envisioned as the World Design Studio, includes students from four continents—Africa, North American, Asia and Europe—and is open to students worldwide. It is the first studio of its kind employing the knowledge and expertise of four Universities in developing student skills in Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Pubic Space in the Age of COVID-19: CAAV5 Conference
This project will be the research and development engine for the CAAV5 Conference, Oct. 14-17, 2020. Working with the Watt Family Innovation Center, we will develop and deliver a fully online conference including a student organized Hack-a-thon. Learning will encompass how we move from in-person content delivery to online/digital and virtual public space. There is the potential for various social and behavioral research projects related to this project. We plan to work with an industry partner, Mozilla.

Design and Development of Medical Devices: Covid-19 Response This project will cover the design and development of medical devices capable of production by small industry. Design challenges including PPEs and a breathing apparatus for medical disasters. Building on work started in Spring 2020 in the School of Architecture we will extend the design, development, and testing of protective devices for medical personnel and first responders. We will seek to produce FDA approved designs and design improvements for existing devices and develop new designs. We will work with CURF to secure necessary forms to manage any technology transfer issues.

It’s a selfless sentiment seen time and again among the Clemson community since the COVID-19 crisis began. At the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities (CAAH), a group of research professors, graduate students and 2020 graduates took 18 3D printers normally used to make scale models and repurposed them to make face shields. Led by Winifred Newman, director of the Clemson University Institute for Intelligent Materials, Systems and Environments (CU-iMSE), and Shan Sutherland, lecturer and manager of the Digital Design Studio and Materials Lab, the group set up five workspaces scattered far apart in the 55,000-square-foot Lee Hall to ensure social distancing and safety.

Clemson recently moved courses to an online environment and suspended all university activities until April 5, 2020 in response to Gov. Henry McMaster orders of the closure of all public schools – including colleges and universities – through March 31. We are cancelling the Spatial Cognition and Design Colloquium in response. We will work to re-schedule at a future date. Keep your papers/thoughts at the ready!

Clemson University invites students, faculty, and staff to submit proposals to showcase dynamic experiences of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) at the 2020 Artisphere festival in Greenville, SC, on May 8-10 (www.artisphere.org). The purpose of this interactive exhibit, sponsored by the colleges of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences and Architecture, Arts and Humanities, is two-fold: (1) To excite the imagination of festival-goers and demonstrate the interconnectedness of technology, engineering, science, design, art, and creativity, and (2) to showcase novel, creative, and engaging STEAM experiences developed by Clemson students, faculty, and staff. Prototype Sim(PLY) houses have been built and tested in South Carolina. Now, the system is set to debut commercially in British Columbia as part of an effort to build affordable housing for teachers, nurses, police and firefighters.
The College/Underserved Community Partnership Program (CUPP) is a federal program that connects the intellectual strengths of College faculty, staff, and students with small or underserved communities. Project ideas are generated by community leaders, and CUPP personnel from branches of the federal government help to connect the projects to University people who may want to address the identified needs. Clemson campus engages in high-impact practices – research, service-learning, project-based curricula – with our graduate and undergraduate students. Faculty and professional staff and students are welcome to think creatively about how the community needs may fit with our educational priorities. Many projects are highly applicable for cross-College collaboration. If you are interested in learning more about any of these project ideas and to get started with community leaders, please contact Associate Dean Dr. Bridget Trogden, Trogden@Clemson.edu.

Habitat for Humanity understands the concept. So do weekend warriors and faithful DIY-ers: The value of a do-it-yourself construction project lies not only in its affordability, but also in its community focus and the pride that comes from creating something by hand, from scratch. Clemson University is taking the concept of DIY construction to the next level with a newly patented 3D building technology, developed by faculty and students at this R1 Research University and land-grant institution. Called Sim[PLY], the building system blends technological advancements with DIY sensibilities. And by finding better ways to build, Clemson also is leading the way in everything from affordable housing to disaster relief shelters, pop-up health care facilities and more.

According to Chris Pastorius, chairman of the PCI Foundation board of trustees, “Carlos’ commitment to architecture education goes beyond the classroom. He has engaged major architectural firms, local precast producers as well as the US State Department in his quest to expand the possibilities for his students. Annually he takes a group of students to Washington D.C. to study the architecture of embassies and their inclusion of precast concrete.”

The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) invites practitioners, researchers, and educators to join us at our 53rd annual conference to engage in a conversation around the role of the built environment in promoting health, equity, sustainability and resilience through environmental design research and practice.
The conference will provide a platform to explore issues of health in the environment in relation to equity, resilience and sustainability, supporting needs of diverse populations, promoting health and well-being in different physical settings, activism and advocacy for health in all design, transdisciplinary collaborations to address complex problems and pedagogies and methods to integrate health foci in environmental design education.
